San Francisco

We got to San Francisco the next day at midday, returned our rental car and met there with Karen. Karen is an argentinean friend, we've known each other since we were about 15 years old and she's been living in USA for about 12 years. We stayed at her house during our stay in San Francisco and she was such an awesome host! She is pregnant (due any minute now!) and so was on maternity leave from work, but that didn't stop her from driving us around everywhere and walking around all day with us.
The day we arrived we went to her house in San Jose (about 40minutes drive south of San Francisco), settled in, chatted with her and her husband Leif for a while and then we went down to Capitola and Santa Cruz. We walked along the beach and the promenade and had some dinner in a mexican restaurant famous for its margaritas.
The next day we picked up a friend of Ana's (Javier, he's and argentinean guy that lives in Australia and is in San Francisco visiting his sister) and the 4 of us did our first day of San Francisco city tour. We went up to Nob Hill for city views, then to the Golden Gate park (beautiful and huge park) and lunch at a restaurant by the waterfront. After that we drove to Haight-Ashbury, the hippie area of town and walked around looking at shops. Next stop, Alamo Square, with its beautiful colourful Victorian houses on a hill "the painted ladies", and from there on to Lombard street- "the crookedest street in the world" (a zigzaging street about 100 metres long only, with 8 corners and downhill, so much fun we did it twice!). After that we went to Coit Tower for more views of the city and drove along Market street and the city centre. We then went to Mission, the latin area, and to Castro, the gay area. The 4 of us stayed the night in the city, at a friend of Karen's place, who was not there cause she is on holidays.
Next day, we went to Crissy Field, a beach with beautiful views of the Godlen Gate bridge and the city, and from there drove on the Golden Gate Bridge to the north side. Up a mountain for views, and then on to Sausalito- a cute area where rich people live by the water. We then went to Muir Woods- a national park with Redwood trees (since we couldn't see the Sequoias at Yosemite NP due to the snow, this was the second best) and did a short hike around there. We then went to Javier's sister's house for dinner, she cooked empanadas and milanesas for us (traditional argentinean food) yum! And back to Karen's place for the night.
The next day Karen, Leif, Ana and I went up to Napa Valley, famous winery region. We spent all day going to wineries, doing wine tasting, and took a guided tour in one of the wineries. We got back to San Jose at night and went out for dinner to a nearby Japanese restaurant.
Last full day, back to San Francisco for city tour part 2. We went back to Lombard street, just to take a nice picture of it from the bottom end, and then to Union Square, a square surrounded by posh stores. Then on to Chinatown for a late lunch and we walked around the area. After that Ana and I got on a trolley (travelling standing up hanging from the sides of course) and Karen followed us in the car up to Fisherman's Wharf. We walked along there, past famous pier 39 and then did the night tour of Alcatraz. It was awesome!! Really interesting and beautiful views of the city by night. Back on the mainland we tried to see the sea lions on pier 39, but it was too dark already, but we could still hear them making loud noises. We got back to Karen's place late at night.
Next day, time to go. We just got up, packed up, and Karen dropped us off at the car rental place. And that was it. Wonderful, beautiful San Francisco!

Increible, hermoso San Francisco!

National Parks/ Parques Nacionales

So, time to say goodbye to Las Vegas and to Lisa. We rented a car the next day, last minute of course, and at about 1pm we set off. We went to the Death Valley National Park, we got there in the afternoon and after chatting to a few people who were staying on the campgrounds we came to the conclusion that sleeping in the car instead of paying for the night (even though we didn't even have a tent) was very wise and not frowned upon by our fellow campers who did pay. But first, we did drive around a bit and watched sunset, and then went to the hotel next door for a free shower (as advised by the fellow campers) and dinner (we did pay for dinner). The night in the car was good, it wasn't cold at all so it was fine. Our only problem was that our rental car (a PT Cruiser, AKA Kit) had a life of his own, and liked to beep, leave lights on, do all sorts of attention seeking stuff which wasn't very discrete; very inconvenient when we were trying to get in unnoticed.
The next day we woke up at sunrise and quickly drove off. We first went to the salt plains- beautiful and neverending. We then drove to some colourful mountains (Artist's palette) and to the Golden Canyon (the walk to the cathedral was not worth it...). We kept looking at stuff on our way out, we were driving towards Yosemite National Park, but due to the time of the year most of the passes were closed, so we had to drive up north a lot to get to a pass that was open. We stayed the night in a small town on the way... can't even recall the name now.
The next day we decided to head up north a bit more and see Lake Tahoe, since we were already so close to it. Lake Tahoe was absolutely beautiful- what a perfect setting for a ski field, with the mountains surrounding the lake, awesome views. We walked around a bit, and went to the Marina area, with expensive looking houses and the Marina water all frozen. We stayed a few hours there and then drove on to Yosemite National Park. The prices for accommodation in the NP were ridiculously expensive (they wanted $95 for an unheated tent!! Plus tax of course), so we drove to El Portal, a town just outside the NP and stayed there for almost the same price (and at a huge hotel room which was big enough to make 3 normal sized rooms in there).
The next day we explored Yosemite. It's huge, lots of stuff to do, but because of the time of the year some parts were closed off due to the snow. We saw the famous waterfall (repeatedly, from every possible angle), some other waterfalls, the Captain (a rock), the half dome (another rock), did some short hikes, went to the museum, the cemetery, the amphiteatre. We left in the afternoon and drove about 1 or 2 hours only, to stay the night in a very "happening" town we had seen on the drive on the way there. We stayed in this cute little hotel, with every room decorated to the detail, EVERYTHING was matching in the room, it was so funny!! It had an old style phone, a jacuzzi, and lots of red things (the phone, the coffee maker, the hair dryer, towels, sheets, curtains, soap, shampoo, deodorizer, EVERYTHING!). We had some dinner in a nice restaurant and then went for a night out to the "oldest continuously running saloon in California"... yes, what a claim to fame! We had a fun night chatting and dancing with the locals and we met a nice Canadian girl as well.

So off we went on our day trip without any sleep. We slept on the way. I was told they showed some videos on the bus apparently. I did wake up at the various stops along the way though. We stopped at Hoover Dam and then a few times for food and toilets... not really necessary as the bus had a toilet, but I guess they couldn't go without food for more than 1 or 2 hours. We got dropped off at the heliport, most of the tour people went to the National Geographic centre instead. The helicopter ride was just BREATHTAKING. It was so beautiful, we flew down into the canyon and then across it. The immensity of it is incredible, and I was moved to tears by it. Watching out the window, down and around, it was so peaceful and magic. The colours were stunning.
After the helicopter ride we were taken back to join the rest of the group (not without some fuck ups on the company's behalf and utter disorganization). We went to a couple of lookouts at the Canyon's south rim and walked along it for a while. It was also beautiful, but the helicopter ride gave a much much better view.
We left at about 5pm and started the long, slow way back to Vegas, making sure we stopped often along the way for the fatties to get their snacks- we wouldn't want a riot on the bus! So by the time we were dropped off at a Las Vegas Boulevard hotel it was almost 11pm. We got a taxi to Lisa's house, and needless to say we passed out as soon as we arrived, considering we had left the house the previous day in the morning and hadn't been back since.

Vegas, baby!

Vegas is insane. Giant casinos, you literally get lost inside them. The entrances are grandiose, but once inside there’s not a single sign pointing to the exits, and they are like small towns, with not only casinos, but also shops, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, attractions and live entertainment. We spent 2 full days walking along Las Vegas Boulevard and walking into the different casinos; it looks close on the map but since the casinos are so huge you spend ages inside each one of them, and walking from one to the next can takes 15 minutes.
Circus circus with its circus acts. The Venetian with its reproduction of Venice, including indoors canal and gondola rides along it. Bellagio with its fountain show and amazing indoor garden. Mirage with its erupting volcano. Paris with the Eiffel Tower replica. Treasure Island and its tacky pirates and mermaids show. Flamingo, all very pink and with flamingos and other animals in the back gardens. Ceasar’s Palace with amazing fountains and decoration, but not so good show. MGM with its lions… which we never saw cause we got there at about 2am and they were gone to bed already. Luxor’s reproduction of not only Luxor, but other places in Egypt as well. Mandalay Bay with a cool live band. Excalibur- the cute medieval castle with trashy people inside. New York New York and its beautiful Statue of Liberty and other famous buildings.
Everything is big, over the top, and artificially stunning. We also went into several wedding chapels, including one of Elvis’ ones. We went into some nightclubs and Coyote Ugly bar- utterly disappointing. The first night we went to a Cirque du Soleil show, “O” (as in eau, water in French)- wonderful, the stage moves up and down and at times is a deep pool and performers swim around and even dive into it. There’s so much to see and do in Vegas!! So much so, that in fact the second night we never went back to Lisa’s house, and instead decided to stay up all night and from there went straight to our Grand Canyon tour the next day. And we didn’t even gamble AT ALL, so imagine if you stop to gamble as well!!

It's a long way to the First World/Un largo camino al Primer Mundo

12th of March. Early wake up. Taxi to the bus station. 8am bus from La Paz to Copacabana, including a short boat ride to cross the Lake Titicaca. Arrived at lunchtime, 1 hour there for lunch, then bus from Copacabana (Bolivia) to Puno (Peru). Got there at about 3pm. Taxi from the bus station to the city centre. Minivan from there to Juliaca, about 50minutes away. Small town, nothing to see, but weirdly enough they have an airport and Puno doesn’t. Internet for an hour and then taxi to the Juliaca airport. Plane from Juliaca to Lima, got there just before 11pm. Airplane from Lima (Peru) to Los Angeles (USA), got there just before 7am. At the LA airport I met up with Ana. Ana is an Argentinean friend from Australia, and we are gonna be traveling together for the next 2 ½ weeks, yay! Airport shuttle to the bus station. Bus from LA to Las Vegas, departing at 10:20am, arriving at 4:30pm. Taxi from Las Vegas bus station to Lisa’a place, where we’ll be staying whilst in Vegas. Lisa is an Australian friend with whom I used to work, she’s now married to an American guy and lives in Vegas. She has 2 beautiful boys: Alex with his crazy hair and Nathan all serious. We got to her house at about 5pm. 13th of March. I had left my hotel in La Paz at 7:15am on the 12th of March. But considering the time difference between Bolivia and USA, another 4-5 hours should be added to calculate how long I traveled for. I can’t be bothered working it out. All I can say is that it was a long trip.

12 de Marzo. Despertarme temprano. A mi me da fiaca calcularlo.

11th of March. Thursday. The day I would find out if I could get into San Pedro gaol. The answer is: NO. I failed miserably at my task. I called several times, they weren’t answering, the person was in a meeting, then they made me call a different person. But finally I got my answer: yes, your application will be approved tomorrow. How can they know something will be approved tomorrow?? If they already know it will be approved it’s because it’s been considered and decided already, so why tomorrow and not today?!?! Anyway, the answer was no, not for today, and I have to leave La Paz first thing in the morning tomorrow cause I have flights to catch. Mission unaccomplished.
But I had a great day anyway. I went to some museums in the city, and then caught a “shared taxi” to the Moon Valley. It was beautiful there, amazing rock formations. I spent some hours walking around the area and got back to the hotel in the afternoon. We had arranged to all meet back there at 7:30pm for a farewell night. I met up with Ighal and Ariel, we waited around for Sergio but he didn’t show up, so we went out for dinner and back to bed shortly after. We were getting worried about Sergio who wasn’t back yet, but he finally got back after 1am- he had gone to have his tattoo done at 10am and had been at the tattoo shop up until now, wow!

11 de Marzo. Jueves. Mision no cumplida.
