A day in Porvoo/ Un dia en Porvoo

We decided with Riitta to go and spend Sunday in Porvoo. Porvoo is a town about 45mins drive away from Helsinki, where Riitta is originally from. So we went there, walked around the cute old town, with a river and colourful buildings. We went into the church and walked up the hill where the castle used to be. We then went into a yummy chocolate shop and bought some goodies (and tasted several others). After that, we went for lunch at Riitta's parents house, we had an awesome lunch with her mother, with lots of different food and a great cake, with berries of course.
Scandinavia is reknowned for their berries, since I got here I've tried so many, these are the ones we managed to think about: strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, lingonberry, mulberry, cloudberry, cranberry, gooseberry, and buckthorn (which is also a berry even though it wants to be original and has a different name from all the rest).
After lunch we went into the sauna, another Scandinavian tradition. They have 1 (well, actually 3!) in the house. And from the steaming sauna, outside into the cold, up to the river, but we didn't dare swim in it, it was way too cold for us. So back into the suffocating sauna again.
It was a truly relaxing day, spent in a truly traditional Finnish way. We then walked around the garden at night, looking at different berry bushes and tress, but unfortunately we didn't see any reindeer or bears (no kidding, they get them here sometimes!).
At night we drove back to Riitta's place in Helsinki, and the next day I went to the airport in the morning, and off to London, final destination!

Decidimos con Riitta ir a pasar un Domingo en Porvoo. Porvoo es un pueblo que queda como a 45minutos en auto de Helsinki, de donde Riitta es originalmente. Asi que fuimos, caminamos por el pueblo antiguo divino, con un rio y edificios de colores. Despues fuimos a la iglesia y subimos la colina donde antes habia un castillo. Despues fuimos a un negocio de chocolates donde compramos algunas cosas (y probamos varias mas). Despues de eso fuimos a almorzar a la casa de los papas de Riitta, comimos un almuerzo barbaro con la mama, con mucha variedad de comida y una torta deliciosa, con fresas/bayas por supuesto.
Escandinavia es conocida por sus fresas/bayas, desde que llegue aca probe montones, estos son los tipos de fresas que pudimos nombrar (traduccion en base a google y diversas paginas de internet): frutilla, arandano azul, zarzamora, frambuesa, arandano rojo, mora, camemoro, arandano agrio, grosella, y espino cerval (y esta ultima tambien es una baya aunque se quiera hacer la original y tenga un nombre tan distinto al resto).
Despues de almorzar fuimos al sauna, otra tradicion escandinava. Tienen 1 (bueno, en verdad tienen 3!) en la casa. Y del sauna humeante, afuera al frio, hasta el rio, pero no nos animamos a meternos a nadar, estaba demasiado frio para nosotras. Asi que de vuelta al sauna sofocante. Fue un dia verdaderamente relajante, y lo pasamos de un modo verdaderamente finlandes. Despues caminamos por el jardin de noche, mirando los distintos arbustos y arboles de bayas, pero lamentablemente no vimos ningun reno ni oso (no es joda, vienen aca a veces!)
A la noche volvimos a la casa de Riitta en Helsinki, y al dia siguiente me fui al aeropuerto a la manana, y parti hacia Londres, destino final!
Chau Escandinavia, fueron 2 meses frios y alucinantes!!

September 11th. World Trade Centre anniversary!

Back in Helsinki! It feels like being home again, coming to a city I've been to before. The ferry arrived at about 10am, and I walked with the woman with whom I had shared the cabin on the ferry into town. We said our goodbyes and I went to wait for Riitta.

Riitta is a friend of Reeta (yeah, too similar, I know). Reeta is a girl I met in Bangkok in November last year, and when I came to Helsinki in July I stayed at her place. Reeta then moved to the north of Finland a few weeks after I left, but during the time I was in Helsinki I met her friends and one of them, Riitta, offered me to stay with her when I returned to Helsinki. So that's how I ended up at Riitta's place.

So I met up with Riitta and we went to her apartment. We spend all afternoon there chatting, and late afternoon she left cause she had a friend's hen's party. I decided to stay in and have a quiet night, using the internet, updating my CV, writing on the blog (finally, I know!!) and getting contact details for employment agencies in London.

So, this is the situation at the moment: when I left Australia my work gave me 12 months of Leave Without Pay (which thanks to a month of holidays I also had accumulated, means 13 months off work. This period is almost over, so I asked for a 6 months extension, cause my plan had always been to travel around for about 12 months and then go to London and work there for about 6 months before going back to Australia (I have a working holiday visa for the UK). The initial response was no, no extension, I need to be back at work on the 14th of October. But after explaining that my plan for the last 6 months is to work, I was told that yes, I could have the 6 months extension, but only if I could show them proof of a job offer and this was approved by them. SOOOOO, here I am, trying to get as much information and contacts before arriving to the UK, cause once I'm there I'm only gonna have 1 month to either find a job, or be back at work in Sydney. It's gonna be hard, I'm not sure I can go through the whole recruitment process and criminal checks etc etc in 1 month, but I'm gonna give it a try!

11 de Septiembre. Aniversario de las Torres Gemelas!

De vuelta en Helsinki! Se siente como estar de nuevo en casa, ir a una ciudad adonde ya estuve antes. El ferry llego tipo 10 de la manana, y camine a la ciudad con la mujer con la que habia compartido la cabina en el ferry. Nos despedimos y me fui a esperarla a Riitta.

Riitta es una amiga de Reeta (si, muy parecido, ya lo se). Reeta es una chica que conoci en Bangkok en Noviembre del anio pasado, y cuando vine a Helsinki en Julio me quede en su casa. Reeta se mudo al norte de Finlandia unas semanas despues que yo me fui, pero mientras estuve en Helsinki conoci a sus amigos, y una de sus amigas, Riitta, me ofrecio de quedarme en su casa cuando volviera a Helsinki. Asi es como termine en la casa de Riitta.

Me encontre con Riitta y fuimos a su departamento. Nos quedamos toda la tarde charlando, y a la tarde-noche Riitta se fue porque tenia la despedida de soltera de una amiga. Yo decidi quedarme en la casa y no salir, usando internet, poniendo al dia mi curriculum, escribiendo en el blog (ya se, por fin!!!) y organizando contactos de agencias de trabajo en Londres.

Esta es la situacion en estos momentos: cuando me fui de Australia mi trabajo me dio 12 meses de Licencia sin Goce de Sueldo, que gracias a un mes de vacaciones que ademas tenia acumuladas, significa 13 meses sin trabajar. Este periodo se me esta por terminar, asi que pedi 6 meses de extension, porque mi plan siempre fue viajar por 12 meses y despues ir a Londres y trabajar ahi por mas o menos 6 meses antes de volver a Australia (tengo una visa de trabajo para el Reino Unido). La respuesta inicial fue no, ninguna extension, necesito estar de vuelta en el trabajo el 14 de Octubre. Pero despues de explicar que mi plan para los ultimos 6 meses es trabajar, me dijeron que si, que me dan los 6 meses de extension, pero solo si les muestro prueba de una oferta de trabajo, y si me la aprueban. Asi queeeee, aqui estoy, tratando de conseguir la mayor cantidad de informacion y contactos posibles antes de llegar al Reino Unido, porque una vez que llego solamente tengo un mes para encontrar un trabajo, o para ya estar de vuelta en el trabajo en Sydney. Va a estar dificil, no creo poder hacer todo el proceso de reclutamiento y los antecedentes penales etc etc en 1 mes, pero lo voy a intentar!

And so again it's proven that what goes around comes around... I had given Guille and Vicente my little dog mascot (which in turn I got from my brother Matias when I was in Argentina) when we met in Brazil in February. So, now we met again in Spain and when the time comes to swap mascots, I get it again! How cool is that, this mascot has been so far in Argentina, Brazil, Spain, and will now continue traveling with me again:) In turn, they got the Soccer World Cup argentinean flag... quite appropriate for it to remain in Spain, considering I watched the final in Spain, and Spain won the World Cup.

Y de nuevo queda demostrado que lo que va, viene... yo les habia dado a Guille y Vicente mi mascota que era un perrito (que a su vez a mi me la habia dado mi hermano Matias en Argentina) cuando nos encontramos en Brazil en Febrero. Y ahora nos encontramos de nuevo en Espania, y al llegar la hora de intercambiar mascotas de nuevo, me la dieron otra vez! Que copado, esta mascota ya estuvo en Argentina, Brazil, Espania, y ahora va a seguir viajando conmigo otra vez:) A cambio, yo les di la bandera argentina del Mundial... que tambien me parece apropiado que se quede en Espania, considerando que mire la final del Mundial en Espania y que Espania salio campeon.

Just before leaving South Africa I swapped mascots with Chris. He got the colourful pillow, I got the cute argentinean flag which had been attached to his car during the Soccer World Cup, waving in the wind as we drove around.

Fran is a guy from Australia whom I met on the second part of the tour. He was keen to do the mascot swap, and to actually start himself swapping the mascot I gave him in turn, and see where it all ends up. It might turn into swapping frenzy! So, he got the Mirinda bottle, which due to having a leak is only useful for decorative purposes now. I got a travel pillow from him, so cool and colourful!

Queria hacer el intercambio de mascota conmigo, e incluso quiere el tambien despues intercambiar la mascota que yo le di, y ver en que termina esto. Tal vez se convierte en una locura intercambialistica! Asi que le di la botella de Mirinda, que por tener un agujero ahora solo sirve para fines decorativos. Y el me dio una almohada de viaje, re copada y colorida!

Yes, I know, I have been neglecting this blog BIG TIME. It's actually more than 2 months since I last wrote on here, shameful! But my intention has always been to keep it up, it's just been hard, you know, travelling is hard work! But I'm back. So, the plan is to try and at least roughly fill in the gaps of the past 2 months, OUCH. I think I will start by writing more recent stuff, and will have to create "empty" posts to be filled out later about the past. Yes, that's the plan.

Si, ya se, estuve quedada con el blog MAL. De hecho ya son mas de 2 meses desde la ultima vez que escribi aca, una verguenza! Pero mi intencion siempre fue continuarlo, solo que se me complico, viajar es muy complicado! Pero estoy de vuelta. Asi que el plan es tratar aunque sea en lineas generales de escribir sobre los 2 ultimos meses, OUCH. Creo que voy a empezar escribiendo sobre lo mas reciente, y voy a tener que crear posts "vacios" que despues voy a ir rellenando sobre el pasado. Si, ese es el plan.

16th of May: At 6pm we had the meeting for the second half of the Intrepid tour. We are 16 in the group now, 6 of us from before (Leanne, Humberto, Karen, Chris, Megan and I) and 10 new people (3 canadians, 6 australians, 1 English). We couldn't believe it, we were SOOOOOOOO happy when we met our new tour leader, Moses. He is such a nice guy, really lovely, knowledgeable, friendly, and actually helpful! Such a change from the useless idiot we had before! We spent the whole meeting going "Oh my God" every time he said something, it's amazing how just from that initial meeting the difference was abysmal. The new people must have thought we were idiots or weirdos, cause we kept smiling and clapping at everything he said and when the meeting was over I actually told Moses "I love you", couldn't help myself. And our cook Henry walked into the room with the biggest smile ever, such a change from our last cook, I saw him smile twice in 16 days.
After the meeting we went out for a farewell dinner with all the people from the last trip, plus some of the people from the new group. It was cool, and sad saying goodbye to everyone. Back to the hotel, and stayed up with Leanne pottering around until about midnight.
17th of May: So, the second half of the Intrepid tour began. Up early and onto the truck. We drove out of Kenya, and into Tanzania. We stopped for lunch on the side of the road shortly after the border crossing.We stopped in Arusha for a while, at a shopping centre full of Wazungu (plural of Mazungu). After that we were supposed to head onto Mto Wa Mbu (literally translates as river of mosquitoes) to camp for the night, but it was getting late so we camped before that, at a Snake Park. We went to the bar for a while before dinner, full of other overland trucks, first time we see so many people at a campsite.
18th of May: After breakfast we took a walk around the snake cages in the snake park, they had some amazing ones, and we all got to hold one of the small ones. We then headed to Mto Wa Mbu. At about 10am we started a walk around the village with local guides. It was a great day, we were out walking until about 3:30pm, we had become so used to spending all day on the truck taking naps that we were exhausted and I was half falling asleep while walking. But it was a very very enjoyable day. We walked around the rice fields, banana plantations, hospital, people's houses. We saw how they make banana beer and tasted it- doesn't really taste like banana, but it does taste like beer. Luckily (or unlickily??) we tasted it before seeing the containers where it's kept, with its million flies in it. We saw the "passport showers" and "passport toilets" which they use, called that way because it looks like a passport photo when people are in them, cause you can see their heads sticking out behind the huts. I used the passport toilet, but it doesn't really work for girls cause once you squat to pee you can't see anything, I was looking forward to peeing with a view. We visited an artist community doing cool paintings and a woodcarving community. We had a traditional lunch cooked to us by the village people, which was absolutely delicious. After getting back on the truck in the afternoon we drove to Karatu, our next campsite town.

16 de Mayo. A las 6pm tuvimos la reunion para la segunda mitad del tour de Intrepid. Ahora somos 16 en el grupo, 6 de la primera mitad (Leanne, Humberto, Karen, Chris, Megan y yo) y 10 personas nuevas (3 canadienses, 6 australianos, 1 inglesa). No lo podiamos creer, estabamos TAAAAAAAAAAAAAN contentos cuando conocimos a nuestro lider nuevo, Moses. Es divino, un amor, sabe un monton, re buena onda, y hasta te ayuda en lo que necesites! Un cambio tan grande en comparacion con el tarado inutil que tuvimos antes! Nos pasamos toda la reunion diciendo "Wow, Por Dios" cada vez que Moses decia algo, es increible como solamente en la primera reunion la diferencia ya era abismal. La gente nueva debe haber pensado que eramos tarados o raros, porque nos la pasamos sonriendo y aplaudiendo cada vez que Moses decia algo, y cuando termino la reunion hasta le dije a Moses "te quiero", no me pude contener la emocion. Y nuestro cocinero Henry llego a la reunion con la sonrisa mas grande que se puedan imaginar, gran cambio despues de nuestro ultimo cocinero, lo vi sonreir 2 veces en 16 dias.
Despues de la reunion salimos a cenar de despedida con toda la gente del primer viaje, mas algunos del nuevo grupo. Estuvo muy bueno, y muy triste despedirnos de los del grupo anterior. De vuelta al hotel, y me quede despierta con Leanne boludeando hasta la medianoche.
17 de Mayo: Y asi, la segunda parte del tour Intrepid comenzo. Nos despertamos temprano y al camion. Nos fuimos de Kenya, y entramos a Tanzania. Paramos a almorzar al costado de la ruta al poco tiempo de entrar en Tanzania. Frenamos en Arusha un rato, en un shopping lleno de Wazungu (plural de Mazungu). Despues de ahi se suponia que seguiamos hasta Mto Wa Mbu (la traduccion literal es rio de mosquitos) para acampar por la noche, pero se nos estaba haciendo tarde asi que acampamos antes, en un Parque de Viboras. Fuimos al bar un rato antes de la cena, primera vez que vemos tanta gente en un campamento.
18 de Mayo: despues del desayuno fuimos a caminar a ver las jaulas de las viboras en el parque de viboras, tenian algunas impresionantes, y agarramos y tocamos a una de las chiquitas. Despues fuimos a Mto Wa Mbu. Tipo 10 am empezamos una caminata por el pueblo con guias locales. Estuvo buenisimo, estuvimos caminando hasta las 3:30pm, nos habiamos acostumbrado tanto a pasar todo el dia en el camion durmiendo siestas que estabamos agotados y yo me estaba quedando dormida caminando. Pero disfrute mucho, mucho el dia. Caminamos por las plantaciones de arroz, bananas, el hospital, las casas de la gente. Vimos como hacen cerveza de banana y la probamos- no tiene mucho gusto a banana, pero si tiene gusto a cerveza. Por suerte (o por mala suerte??) la probamos antes de ver los tachos donde la almacenan, con un millon de moscas. Vimos los "banios pasaporte" y las "duchas pasaporte" que usan, que se llaman asi porque se le ve la cabeza a la gente como si fuera una foto pasaporte cuando estan adentro, sobresaliendo por encima de las chozas. Yo use el banio pasaporte, pero en realidad no funciona para las mujeres, porque una vez que te agachas para hacer pis no se ve para afuera, tenia ganas de hacer pis con vista panoramica. Visitamos una comunidad de artistas que hacian pinturas muy buenas y una comunidad de gente que hacia trabajos en madera. Comimos un almuerzo tradicional que nos cocino la gente del pueblo, absolutamente delicioso. Cuando volvimos al camion a la tarde manejamos hasta Karatu, nuestra proxima parada de camping.

As we left Uganda to re enter Kenya I did the next mascot swap, again with Frankie, and English girl from the tour. I gave her the ghost/foot pin she had given me before (what goes around comes around) and I got her Mirinda bottle- originally it was her drinking bottle and used to work, but due to a hole it's now retired as a bottle and is serving solely as a mascot from now onwards.

Cuando nos ibamos de Uganda para volver a entrar a Kenya hice el siguiente intercambio de mascota, de nuevo con Frankie, una inglesa de mi tour. Le di el prendedor de fantasma/pie que ella me habia dado antes (todo vuelve) y ella me dio su botella de Mirinda- originalmente era su botella de la que tomaba y funcionaba, pero debido a un agujero ahora se jubilo de su funcion de botella y trabaja puramente como una mascota de ahora en mas.

Last few days of the first tour/ Los ultimos dias del tour

The next day, 12th of May, we left early for another day of driving. We left Rwanda, and back into Uganda again, making our way back to Kenya eventually. We spent the night in Lake Mburo National Park. The campsite area where we pitched our tents was full of warthogs everywhere. Having them around us and so close was a mixture of cool, disgusting, and scary, especially when they were blocking the toilet door and I couldn't walk past until they decided to move. There were also hippos in the lake, and we saw the most amazing thunder in the distance.
On the 13th we woke up very very early.... can't recall the time, but I think we had our small breakfast at something like 5am. We then went on a game walk for a couple of hours. We didn't see any cool animals really, just some antelope, birds, insects, footprints... but the really exciting highlight of the walk was when we heard noises from a bush nearby. We were shitting ourselves, not knowing what was in there, and then suddendly 2 warthogs come running out, and a few seconds later a third one also ran out in the opposite direction, we screamed like idiots, hilarious! After the walk we went back to the campsite and had a second, bigger breakfast: pancakes! Oh yeah, we were in heaven! After breakfast we left. We stopped at the Equator again, we had lunch there by the road, and we attempted to stand up an egg. Supposedly if you stand up an egg right on the Equator it will stay up, cause eggs always fall towards the Equator depending on which hemisphere you are in. It didn't work, the egg kept falling: we decided the Myth has been Busted... although the experiment was maybe not performed under the most rigurous scientific conditions.
After our egg failure we drove onto Jinja. Me and 4 others signed off the Intrepid tour when we were arriving Jinja and left on our own: Humberto from Mexico, Chad from Canada, Tim and Hayley from Australia, and me. The other 4 signed out cause they wanted to go whitewater rafting with a different company than the one offered by Intrepid. I signed out cause I was sick and tired of the leaders and needed a bit of time out to avoid becoming violent towards them, and for my own mental health. The feeling as soon as we got off the truck was one of absolute and utter freedom. We were so excited, we couldn't stop grinning and smiling and saying how good it felt, it felt like being on holidays, CUA! So we walked to the backpackers where the guys wanted to book their rafting, and from there they gave us a lift to their other backpackers, which was out of town, by the Nile River, and which was busier and cooler than the hostel in town. We had a night of celebrating our freedom, ate hamburgers and drank alcohol, and were happy as!
14th of May I slept until 10:40am, bliss! Checkout at 11, so after that I walked to the Bujagali Falls, which were right next to the hostel. There I sat down with some locals, looking at the Nile River and the falls (which are really just rapids, not much of a fall in fact). I had such a wonderful day, sitting and chatting with all the locals for hours. In the afternoon I walked from the falls to the Intrepid campsite, it took me over an hour, which was also fun cause I stopped several times on the way to talk with the kids who would just run out of their houses to wave at me and shake my hand when they saw me walking past on the road. At the campsite I pitched up my tent and hang out at the bar with the rest of the group, and had a delicious pizza. The other 4 guys who had signed out got back at nighttime, just in time to hear the argument between the leaders and the people who had remained on the tour, because they were supposed to take them to the Bujagali Falls but didn't do it. Oh yeah, back to the joys of Intrepid travel!
15th of May. Thank God, only 1 day left of this torture of a tour! Everyone's counting down days for this shit trip to end, some people are even keen to go back home and to work, that's how crap these leaders are! So, left Jinja in the morning and we drove to Eldoret. Eldoret is famous for its cheese. We stopped in town to visit a cheese factory, which we decided was clearly not the factory where we were supposed to have stopped- very dodgy, disorganised, they even tried to make us miss it but we insisted on it. At least we got to buy some ice cream. After that we went to the campsite, we had already stayed here for 1 night at the beginning of the trip. So, being our last night the tradition is that there's a special farewell dinner, generally a barbeque from what I've heard. Not this guys, they just gave us some cash and we bought our own dinner at the campsite. Thankfully they didn't join us for dinner, but instead cooked dinner for themselves but not for us! Shocker!
I stayed up late that night with Humberto and Chad, with the owner of the place, and with some other tourists. The first time we had stayed there Humberto and Chad had been told the story of The Lemon Tree by the owner. The story is: the owner planted some lemon trees, almost all of them on one side outside of the kitchen, and just 1 at the back. They all grew satisfactorily, except for this 1 tree which for some reason remained small. So the guy thought it wasn't growing cause it was the only tree not getting any ammonia, which all the others were getting cause people were emptying the kitchen pots with cleaning product in them on the front lemon trees. So he decided to start peeing on The Lemon Tree to give it some ammonia. So for the past 6 months he has been peeing on The Lemon Tree every day, and it is growing strong! I HAD to see this tree, of course. So I asked if I could see it, and we all went on an excursion and looked at it. When we got back to the bar I asked if I could pee on it. He said yes, so me and his wife walked back there, and we took turns peeing on it. What an honour! I was the first woman to ever pee on The Lemon Tree! After that Humberto and Chad followed, and the owner was so excited about this that he wants to start a tradition and hopes all tourists will go and pee on it. I feel I am part of history on the make! So it was a very late night, going to bed at 2:15am, and the next day waking up at 5:15am but it was well worth it.
The 16th of May we started very early, and got back to Nairobi before 1pm. We all had a very non-sentimental goodbye with our leaders, with no tipping and half of the people not even farewelling them. Back to the starting point, to the same hotel, where tonight we are meeting our new leaders and new group for the next part of the trip. I am undecided about whether I will do the next Intrepid half or not, leaning more towards no, cause this was such a negative experience. I will wait and meet the new leaders, and then decide based on that. After we arrived, I went over to the backpackers hostel where I had stayed initially in Nairobi, visited people there and used the internet, and then back to the hotel by 6pm for the Intrepid meeting.

Al dia siguiente, 12 de Mayo, salimos temprano para otro dia de manejo. Salimos de Rwanda, y entramos de nuevo a Uganda, de camino hacia Kenya otra vez. Pasamos la noche en el Parque Nacional Lago Mburo. La zona de camping donde pusimos nuestras carpas estaba llena de jabalies salvajes por todos lados. Tenerlos tan cerca nuestro a nuestro alrededor fue una mezcla de copado, desagradable, y miedo, sobre todo cuando estaban enfrente de la puerta del banio y no podia pasar hasta que finalmente se movieron. Tambien habia hipopotamos en el lago y vimos relampagos espectaculares a la distancia.
El 13 nos despertamos muy, muy temprano... no me acuerdo la hora, pero me parece que tuvimos un mini desayuno tipo 5am. Despues fuimos a hacer una caminata para ver animales por un par de horas. No vimos ningun animal copado la verdad, solo antilopes, aves, insectos, pisadas de animales... pero lo mas copado de la caminata fue cuando oimos ruidos de un arbusto cerca nuestro. Estabamos cagados de miedo, sin saber que habia en el arbusto, y de repente salen corriendo 2 jabalies, y unos segundos mas tarde un tercer jabali tambien sale corriendo en la direccion opuesta, gritamos todos, re tarados, muy gracioso! Despues de la caminata volvimos adonde acampamos y tuvimos un segundo desayuno mas grande: panqueques! Si, si, un suenio! Despues del desayuno nos fuimos. Paramos en el Ecuador otra vez, almorzamos ahi sobre la ruta, y tratamos de parar un huevo. Supuestamente si pones un huevo parado justo sobre la linea del Ecuador se queda parado, porque los huevos siempre se caen hacia el lado del Ecuador, dependiendo en que hemisferio estes. No funciono, el huevo se nos cayo todas las veces. Decidimos que es un Mito Refutado... aunque tal vez el experimento no se desarrollo bajo las condiciones cientificas mas rigurosas.
Despues de nuestro fracaso del huevo manejamos hasta Jinja. Yo y 4 personas mas firmamos para separarnos del tour de Intrepid cuando estabamos llegando a Jinja, y nos fuimos por nuestra cuenta: Humberto de Mexico, Chad de Canada, Tim y Hayley de Australia, y yo. Los otros 4 se salieron porque querian hacer rafting con una compania diferente de la que tenia el acuerdo con Intrepid. Yo me sali porque estaba cansada de los lideres del tour y necesitaba tiempo aparte para no violentarme con ellos, y para mi propia salud mental. El sentimiento compartido que tuvimos apenas nos bajamos del camion fue pura y exclusivamente un sentimiento de libertad. Estabamos re alterados, no podiamos parar de sonreir y reirnos, no podiamos parar de decir que bien que nos sentiamos, nos sentiamos como de vacaciones, CUA! Caminamos al hostel donde los chicos querian contratar su rafting, y de ahi nos llevaron al otro hostel, fuera de la ciudad, sobre el Rio Nilo, y que tenia mas onda y mas gente que el hostel de la ciudad. Tuvimos una noche de celebracion de nuestra libertad, comimos hamburguesas y tomamos alcohol, y fuimos muy felices!
14 de Mayo dormi hasta las 10:40am, paraiso! Checkout del hotel a las 11am, asi que despues de ahi camine a las Cataratas Bujagali, que quedaban justo al lado del hostel. Me quede ahi sentada con los locales, charlando con ellos, frente al Rio Nilo y las cataratas (que de hecho son solo los rapidos del rio, no hay ninguna catarata). Fue un dia buenisimo, charlando con los locales por horas. A la tarde me fui caminando desde las cataratas hasta el campamento donde estaba el grupo de Intrepid, tarde mas de una hora, y estuvo tambien muy bueno tambien porque en el camino frene a charlar con todos los chicos, que salian corriendo de las casas para saludarme y darme la mano cuando me viean pasar por la calle. Cuando llegue arme mi carpa y me quede en el bar con el resto del grupo, y me comi una pizza deliciosa. Los otros 4 que se habian separado del grupo llegaron a la noche, justo a tiempo para escuchar la discusion entre los lideres y los otros que se habian quedado en el tour, porque se suponia que los tenian que haber llevado a las cataratas Bujagali pero no los llevaron. Si si, de vuelta a la alegria de Intrepid!
15 de Mayo. Gracias a Dios, solo falta un dia de esta tortura de tour! Todo el mundo esta contando los dias para que termine este tour de mierda, algunos hasta estan con ganas de volver a sus casas y a trabajar, tan chotos son nuestros lideres! Nos fuimos de Jinja a la manana y manejamos hasta Eldoret. Eldoret es famosa por sus quesos. Paramos en la ciudad a visitar una fabrica de quesos, que decidimos que definitivamente no era la fabrica de quesos en la que deberiamos haber parado- muy sospechosa, desorganizado, hasta trataron de hacer que no la visitemos pero insistimos en ir. Por lo menos pudimos comprar helado. Despues de ahi fuimos al campamento, ya nos habiamos quedado aca por 1 noche al principio del tour. Siendo nuestra ultima noche, la tradicion es que hay una cena especial de despedida, generalmente un asado por lo que me habian contado. No con estos tipos, nos dieron plata y nos compramos nuestra propia cena. Por suerte ni vinieron a cenar con nosotros, pero se cocinaron su propia cena aunque a nosotros no! Increible!
Esa noche me quede despierta hasta tarde con Chad y con Humberto, con el duenio del lugar, y con algunos otros turistas. La primera vez que nos habiamos quedado ahi, el duenio del lugar les habia contado a Chad y a Humberto la historia del Arbol de Limones. La historia es: el duenio planto varios arboles limoneros, casi todos de un lado afuera de la cocina, y solo 1 en la parte de atras. Todos crecieronn satisfactoriamente, menos por este arbol de atras que or algun motivo se quedo chiquito. Entonces el duenio penso que no estaba creciendo porque era el unico arbol que no estaba recibiendo amoniaco, que todos los otros arboles recibian porque la gente que trabaja en la cocina tiraba ahi el agua despues de limpiar las ollas de la cocina con productos de limpieza. Asi que decidio empezar a hacer pis en El Arbol de Limones para darle amoniaco. Asi que durante los ultimos 6 meses hace pis todos los dias en El Arbol de Limones, y esta creciendo fuerte! Yo TENIA que ver este arbol, por supuesto. Asi que pregunte si lo podia ver, y todos fuimos a hacer una excursion para verlo. Cuando volvimos al bar pregunte si podia hacer pis en el Arbol. Me dijo que si, asi que yo y la mujer del duenio volvimos al Arbol, y hicimos pis en el Arbol en turnos. Que honor! Soy la primera mujer en hacer pis en el Arbol de Limones!! Despues de nosotras, Chad y Humberto tambien hicieron pis en el Arbol, y el duenio estaba tan copado que quiere empezar una tradicion y que todos los turistas vayan y hagan pis en el Arbol. Me siento que soy parte de la historia que se esta escribiendo! Asi que nos fuimos a dormir muy tarde, a las 2:15am, y al dia siguiente nos tuvimos que despertar a las 5:15am, pero bien valio la pena.
El 16 de Mayo salimos bien temprano, y llegamos a Nairobi antes de la 1pm. Tuvimos una despedida nada emotiva con nuestros lideres, sin dar propinas y la mitad de la gente ni se despidio de ellos. De vuelta al punto de partida, al mismo hotel, donde hoy a la noche vamos a conocer a los nuevos lideres y nuevos integrantes del grupo para la siguiente parte del tour. Yo estoy indecisa sobre si voy a hacer la siguiente parte del tour de Intrepid o no, me inclino mas hacia el NO, porque esta primera parte fue una experiencia tan negativa. Voy a esperar a conocer a los nuevos lideres, y despues decidire en base a eso. Cuando llegamos, me fui al hostel donde me habia quedado en un principio cuando llegue a Nairobi, visite a la gente ahi y use internet, y despues de vuelta al hotel antes de las 6pm para la reunion de Intrepid.

Gorillas in the Mist/ Gorilas en la Niebla

So, I was gonna talk about the 9th of May before I went off topic saying how much Intrepid sucks. So back to the story. 9th of May. We left Uganda and entered Rwanda. We went to the Genocide Museum there, it was very interesting and moving, very well made and informative. We spent a couple of hours there, and then arrived in Ruhengeri. No tents for a few nights, yay! Here we are staying in a dorm room in a Mission... although we are not quite sure why it's a mission, cause all we can see are restaurants, conference rooms, internet cafe, a bar... Anyway, no tents for 3 days, life is good. Sleeping in the tent is no problem at all, it's just the pitching it up and setting it down every single day which gets a bit tiring.
The next day we had a free day to wander around town. I left in the morning on my own and spent all morning walking around town, talking to locals. Went to the gorillas conservation organization office, and to the gorilla tracking office, to the market, and shook hands with probably half of the kids in the whole town:) It was an awesome day, I really enjoyed having some time off on my own, and especially getting a chance to actually walk around a place (village, town, city, whatever) as opposed to just driving through it on the truck and watching it go by from a window. In the afternoon I hang around the "mission"- laundry, internet, reading, chilling.
11 of May. D-Day. THE reason for this first half of my Intrepid Tour. Gorillas tracking. YAY! Mountain gorillas are in danger of extinction, there's only a few hundred left in the world, and some of the gorilla families have been habituated to human contact and can be tracked and observed for 1 hour. It can be done in 3 countries in the world only: Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. So this is the reason for all this traveling on the truck, to reach Rwanda, which I had read is the best of the 3 countries to do the trek. And it was SO worth it! It was AMAZING. We tracked a family of 12 gorillas, consisting of 1 silverback (the dominat male- HUGE, how can I describe the feeling of panic when he walked straight towards us, and I couldn't back up cause I had a tree behind me, and then a couple of metres in front of me he turned and walked past our side!!), some females, and 4 or 5 babies (so cute, the youngest was 6 months old, the oldest 2 1/2 years old). So we spent our INCREDIBLE hour observing the gorillas, they spent most of the time eating- taking the bark off the trees with their teeth, but we also got to see a couple of chest beating gorillas (including when a cute little one looked at us, stood up, and did his chest beating- poor thing, we all just laughed at him!), some running around and walking, playing with each other, and a baby one playing with a small plant, just holding it, stretching it out, and then swinging from it in circles, it was beautiful!! We are supposed to keep a distance of about 8 metres from them, but the reality is that the gorillas come up to us A LOT, so all you can do is slowly back up a bit, but they were still about 1-2 metres from us on several occassions. It was well worth the more than $500 dollars it costs, it was an unforgettable experience!!
Worthy of mention was our driver to and from the gorilla trek starting point: DJ Kevin, or as we nicknamed him, DJ Kev. What a knob! We had first hand proof that he sucks both as a DJ and as a driver: we had to get off the car and walk when he got "stuck" in a muddy road, without really trying much to get through, and we had the pleasure of discussing with him some favourite bands, such as Britney Spears, N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls.
When we got back to the Mission we found that the truck and none of our leaders were there, they arrived after about 30minutes, only for them all to get off the truck and jump into Dj Kev's car and leave. They were back 5 1/2 hours later. The truck was locked. No one could get in it. We weren't happy. And we let them know. It was just one lie after the other what we got from them, stupid excuses such as saying that they were gone cause they took the truck to be fixed (they overlooked the fact that the truck was at the Mission during the 5 1/2 hours while they were suppossedly fixing it), or that they didn't know that we were back from the gorilla trek (again, they overlooked the fact that they actually left with our driver so of course we were back). The shit hit the fan, there was a fight, but as usual they just lied and gave no straight answers.
Oh, and how could I forget! One of the nights we stayed in Ruhengeri there was a big storm. And we were sitting at the bar when we suddendly saw a car which was parked in the Mission on fire! It was an awesome sight, although maybe not too awesome for the car's owner. People ran down and had to break the window and put the fire out. Exciting night! The next day someone saw the car's owner driving the car around town as if nothing had happened, although the car looked crap.

Si, iba a hablar sobre el 9 de mayo antes de irme de tema diciendo que Intrepid es una mierda. Asi que de vuelta a la historia. 9 de mayo. Salimos de Uganda y entramos a Rwanda. Fuimos al Museo del Genocidio ahi, muy interesante y conmovedor, muy bien hecho e informativo. Pasamos un par de horas ahi, y despues llegamos a Ruhengeri. Sin carpa por 3 noches, yay! Aca nos estamos quedando en un cuarto todos juntos en una Mision... aunque no estamos muy seguros de por que es una mision, porque lo unico que vimos nosotros son restaurantes, internet, salas de conferencia, un bar.... pero bueno, de todos modos lo que importa es que no tenemos que dormir en carpa por 3 dias, la buena vida. Dormir en la carpa no es el problema para nada, solo que tener que ponerla y sacarlas casi todos los dias es un poco cansador.
Al dia siguiente tuvimos un dia libre para recorrer el pueblo. Yo me fui a la manana sola y me pase toda la manana caminando por el pueblo, hablando con la gente del lugar. Fuimos a la oficina de conservacion de los gorilas, y a la oficina de los tours de los gorilas, al mercado, y le di la mano a por lo menos la mitad de los chicos de todo el pueblo:) Fue un dia excelente, me encanto tener un poco de tiempo sola, y sobre todo tener la oportunidad de poder caminar por un lugar (pueblo, ciudad, etc), en vez de solamente pasar manejando en el camion y verlo por la ventana. A la tarde me quede en la "mision"- internet, lavar ropa, leyendo, relejada.
11 de mayo. El dia D. LA razon para la primera parte del tour de Intrepid. Caminata con gorilas, YAY! Los gorilas de la montania estan en peligro de extincion, solo quedan unos pocos cientos en el mundo, y algunas de las familias de gorilas han sido habituadas al contacto con los humanos y se pueden hacer caminatas para buscarlos, y mirarlos por 1 hora. Solo se lo puede hacer en 3 paises en el mundo: Uganda, Rwanda, y la Republica Democratica del Congo. Asi que esta es la razon de todo este viaje en el camion, para llegar a Rwanda, que segun lo que habia leido es el mejor de los 3 paises para hacer la caminata. Y valio TANTO la pena! Fue INCREIBLE! Visitamos una familia de 12 gorilas, que consistia de uno plateado (el macho dominante- ENORME, como puedo describir el sentimiento de panico cuando empezo a caminar directamente hacia nosotros, y yo no podia retroceder porque tenia un arbol atras mio, y despues un par de metros frente a mi, giro y nos paso caminando por al lado!!), algunas hembras, y 4 o 5 bebes (tan divinos, el mas chico tenia 6 meses, el mas grande 2 anios y medio). Nos pasamos nuestra hora ALUCINANTE mirando los gorilas, se pasaron la mayoria del tiempo comiendo- sacandole la corteza a los arboles con los dientes, pero tambien vimos un par de gorilas golpeandose el pecho (incluyendo cuando uno de los bebes divinos nos miro, se paro, y se golpeo el pecho- pobrecito, nos matamos de la risa de el!), algunos corriendo y caminando, jugando entre si, y un bebe jugando con una planta- la agarraba, la estiraba, y despues se columpiaba de la rama en circulos, hermoso!! Se supone que tenemos que permanecer a una distancia de 8 metros de los gorilas, pero la realidad es que los gorilas se nos acercaban UN MONTON, asi que lo unico que podes hacer es retroceder un poquito, pero igualmente los teniamos a 1 o 2 metros de distancia muchas veces. Bien valio la pena los mas de $500 que costo, fue una experiencia inolvidable!
Vale mencionar a nuestro conductor hacia y de vuelta de la caminata con los gorilas: DJ Kevin, o como nosotros lo llamamos, DJ Kev. Que tarado! Tuvimos prueba directa de que es un desastre como DJ y como conductor: tuvimos que bajarnos del auto y caminar cuando se quedo "estancado" en una calle barrosa, sin realmente haber intentado mucho tratar de pasar, y tuvimos el gusto de hablar sobre algunas de sus bandas preferidas, como Britney Spears, N' Sync, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls.
Cuando volvimos a la Mision nos encontramos con que el camion y nuestros lideres no estaban, llegaron como media hora mas tarde, y enseguida se bajaron del camion y se subieron todos auto de DJ Kev y se fueron con el. Volvieron 5 horas y media mas tarde. El camion estaba cerrado con llave. Nadie pudo entrar. No estabamos contentos para nada. Y se los hicimos saber. Y sus respuestas fueron puras mentiras, excusas estupidas como decir que se habian ido porque tenian que arreglar el camion (se les paso el detalle que el camion estuvo en la Mision durante las 5 horas y media durante las cuales supuestamente lo estaban arreglando), o que no sabian que habiamos vuelto de la caminata con los gorilas (de nuevo, se les paso el detalle que ellos de hecho se fueron en el auto con nuestro conductor asi que obviamente que habiamos vuelto). Se armo el quilombo, pero como de costumbre solo nos dijeron mentiras y no nos dieron ninguna respuesta sobre nada.
Ah, y como me pude haber olvidado! Una de las noches que nos quedamos en Ruhengeri hubo una tormenta. Y estabamos sentados en el bar cuando de repente vimos un auto que estaba estacionado en la Mision prendiendose fuego! My copado ver eso, auqnue tal vez no tan copado para el duenio del auto. La gente salio corriendo y tuvieron que romper la ventana y apagar el fuego. Emocionante! Al dia siguiente alguien vio al duenio manejando el auto por el pueblo, como si nada, auqnue el auto estaba destruido.

8th of May. Up early as usual, tents down as usual, breakfast at 7 as usual, and back on the road as usual. We drove all day, and got to Lake Bunyoni in the afternoon. After setting up camp I decided to have a day on strike: no laundry and no showering- after all we are on a camping trip, it's ridiculous that we are showering every day!! It's more like luxury camping actually, we have mostly hot showers and nice toilets everywhere, normally a bar or even restaurant area, the places where we are staying are nicer than most of the hostels I normally stay in!!
Instead we headed to the bar, with beautiful view of the lake, and got drank with gin and tonic- can't remember the last time I had drank! After a few hours of chilling out at the bar we headed back to the campsite for dinner and bed afterwards.

9th of May. Tents, down, blah blah, the usual stuff, and off we went again. This tour is starting to bore me and piss me off, it's more like a boot camp than a holiday! The tour leaders are very uptight, zero fun, and run the whole thing so routine-like, we are like automatons with our daily chores and lining up for everything. Everyone (or at least the great majority) of the group are fed up with it. Many have done previous tours, and many of them with Intrepid itself, and they ALL agree that this one sucks, that they have always had cool leaders before and never such castrating and incompetent people before. Some people are actually considering bailing out and continuing on their own (me included) but it sucks to lose all the money as the tour is all paid for already. Good thing is that in 1 weeks time the tour leaders change and also most of the people on the group, so I've decided to wait until then at least, and then make a decision after meeting the new group and leaders. We'll see, but so far I can say Intrepid SUCKS and I will certainly never again do a tour in my life!

8 de Mayo. Nos despertamos temprano como de costumbre, desarmamos las carpas como de costumbre, desayunamos a las 7 como de costumbre, y de vuelta en camino como de costumbre. Manejamos todo el dia, y llegamos al Lago Bunyoni a la tarde. Despues de armar las carpas decidi estar en huelga por el dia: no lavar ropa a mano y no banarme- despues de todo estamos en un viaje acampando, es ridiculo que nos estamos banando todos los dias!! De hecho es mas como campamento de lujo, la mayoria de las veces tenemos duchas calientes y banios limpios, por lo general hay un bar o hasta restaurante, los lugares donde nos estamos quedando son mas lindos que la mayoria de los hostels en los que me suelo quedar!
Asi que declarada la huelga nos fuimos al bar, con vista al lago lindisimo, y me puse un pedo con gin y tonic- ni me acuerdo la ultima vez que habia tomado! Despues de unas horas de relajarnos en el bar volvimos a la zona de las carpas a cenar, y despues a dormir.
9 de Mayo. Desarmar las carpas, blah blah, lo de siempre, y nos fuimos de nuevo. Este tour me esta empezando a aburrir y a molestar, es mas como enternamiento de la colimba que vacaciones! Los lideres del grupo son re estrictos, cero buena onda, y llevan el tour tan rutinariamente, parecemos robots con nuestras tareas diarias, haciendo fila para todo. Todos (o por lo menos la gran mayoria) del grupo estan hartos. Hay muchos que hicieron tours antes, y muchos con la compania Intrepid incluso, y TODOS coinciden con que este tour APESTA, y que siempre tuvieron lideres buena onda en el pasado y nunca gente tan castradora e incompetente como estos. Hay gente que de hecho esta considerando abandonar el grupo y seguir por su cuenta (yo incluida) pero es uan cagada perder toda la plata porque el tour ya esta todo pago. Lo bueno es que en 1 semana los lideres cambian, y tambien la mayoria de la gente del grupo, asi que decidi esperar hasta ese entonces por lo menos, y despues de conocer al nuevo grupo y lideres tomar la decision. Ya veremos, pero por ahora lo unico que puedo decir es que Intrepid ES UNA MIERDA y que definitivamente nunca mas en mi vida vuelvo a hacer un tour!

More/Mas Uganda

5th of May. We left Kampala in the morning, as usual breakfast at 7, with tents down and all packed before then. We drove to a shopping centre and stayed there while the cook was doing the grocery shopping, it was raining badly, so we just walked around, looked at the shops (most still closed and went to a coffee shop for a while. We then drove on, stopped by the side of the road for lunch. As soon as they saw our truck slowing down the locals started gathering round. So we had a bit of an audience for our unpacking, lunch cooking and lunch eating. There were a few men and at least 20 kids all sat watching us, and they stayed for the whole Mazungu (white people) show. Back on the truck again, and on with the drive and we got to Kibale Forest National Park in the afternoon, our next camping site. We all went nuts on the hand washing laundry after putting up the tents, considering it was a beautiful sunny day, but of course it got overcast shortly after and then rained later on- after all, it is the wet season so we are getting rain every day. We hang out there for the rest of the day.

6th of May. We woke up at the usual time, 6:15am but it was a nice change not having to put the tents down, cause we are staying here for 2 nights. So after breakfast off to do a chimpanzee trek in the Kibale Forest. It was excellent, I really enjoyed it. We walked for 3 hours in the forest, watching the chimpanzees up on the trees and down in the ground, following them when we saw one as that leads you to the others in the group. But they are really fast, so then they run away somewhere else and so you gotta listen out for them and go find another group. At times they get all worked up and get really noisy, all at the same time, and after a minute they all go silent again, very funny. We got back to the campsite for lunch and spent the afternoon there, hanging around, reading and playing Uno (with even more made up rules than I usually play it, and that means a lot!)

7th of May. Left in the morning, on the truck, and stopped at a local market by the side of the road for a while. They had food, fruits and veggies, shoes, clothes, a bit of everything. We wandered around for a while talking to people and then back on the truck. We stopped at the Equator, we crossed into the northern hemisphere, and had the obliged photo right at the Equator with one foot in each hemisphere. We drove onto Queen Elizabeth National Park, our next night stop, stopping along the way when we spotted animals, and arrived at 1pm. Tents up, lunch, and off to a boat ride in the National Park. It was really good, we saw heaps of animals: hippos up close, in and out of the water, lions, elephants, buffalos, crocodiles, different types of antelopes and birds. We got back to the campsite at about 6:30pm. Dinner, cold shower and then we hang out at the bar area for a while. Oh, and I forgot to mention the ants attack!! Our tents were all infested with ants (luckily just on the outside,) so we had to move them all and spray them. But the little bastards were everywhere, so if you walked around you would get them all climbing up your body in seconds. It took me 3 gos to be able to walk from the toilet block to my tent, cause every time I attempted the journey I would get full of ants and had to go back to the toilets, pull my pants down and get them all out and try again. A few still managed to make it into the tent, so I had a most interesting night trying to kill them and get them off me all night.

5 de mayo. Nos fuimos de Kampala a la manana, como de costumbre desayuno a las 7, con las carpas desarmadas y todo guardado antes de desayunar. Fuimos a un shopping y nos quedamos ahi mientras el cocinero fue a hacer las compras. Llovia mal asi que nos quedamos ahi dando unas vueltas, mirando negocios (la mayoria todavia cerrados) y fuimos a un cafe un rato. Despues seguimos manejando, paramos al costado de la ruta a almorzar. Cuando vieron que nuestro camion empezo a bajar la velocidad para parar la gente dellugar se empezo a acercar y se reunieron ahi. Asi que tuvimos un poco de publico mientras desempacabamos, cocinabamos y comiamos el amiuerzo. Habian algunos hombres y por lo menos 20 chicos, todos sentados mirandonos, y se quedaron para el show completo de los Mazungus (gente blanca). De vuelta al camion y a seguir manejando y llegamos al Parque Nacional Selva Kibale a la tarde, nuestro siguiente lugar para acampar. Nos pusimos todos a lavar ropa a mano como locos despues de armar las carpas, considerando que era un dia lindisimo soleado, pero obviamente que al rato se nublo todo y llovio mas tarde- despues de todo es la temporada de lluvias y esta lloviendo todos los dias. Nos quedamos ahi el resto del dia.

6 de mayo. Nos despertamos a la hora de siempre, 6:15am pero estuvo bueno por una vez no tener que desarmar las carpas, porque nos quedamos aca por 2 noches. Asi que despues de desayunar fuimos a hacer un trekking de chimpances en la Selva Kibale. Estuvo excelente, lo re disfrute. Caminamos por 3 horas en la selva, mirando a los chimpances arriba de los arboles y abajo en el piso, siguiendolos cuando veiamos a alguno porque eso te conduce a los otros del grupo. Pero son re rapidos, asi que se van corriendo a algun lado asi que hay que escuchar y prestar atencion e ir a buscar a otro grupo. Por momentos se descontrolan y se vuelven todos re ruidosos al mismo tiempo, y despues de un minuto se ponen todos en silencio de nuevo, muy graciosos. Volvimos al lugar donde estamos acampando para almorzar y pasamos ahi la tardea, boludeando, leyendo, y jugando al Uno (con incluso mas reglas inventadas que con las que juego normalmente, y eso es mucho decir).

7 de mayo. Salimos a la manana, en el camion, y paramos un rato en un mercado al costado de la ruta. Tenian comida, frutas y verduras, zapatos, ropa, un poco de todo. Dimos vueltas un rato hablando con la gente de ahi y de vuelta al camion. Paramos en el Ecuador, cruzamos al hemisferio norte, y sacamos la foto obligada justo en el Ecuador, con un pie en cada hemisferio. Seguimos hasta el Parque Nacional Reina Elizabeth, nuestra proximo lugar para pasar la noche, parando en el camino cuando veiamos animales, y llegamos a la 1pm. Pusimos las carpas, almorzamos, y fuimos a hacer un paseo en barco en el Parque Nacional. Estuvo muy bueno, vimos montones de animales: hipopotamos de cerca, dentro y fuera del agua, leones, elefantes, bufalos, cocodrilos, diferentes tipos de antilopes y aves. Volvimos al lugar donde acampamos tipo 6:30pm. Cena, ducha fria, y despues estuvimos en el bar un rato. Ah, y me olvide de mencionar el ataque de hormigas!! Nuestras carpas estaban todas infestadas de hormigas (por suerte solo del lado de afuera), asi que tuvimos que moverlas todas y rociarlas. Pero las muy guachas estaban por todos lados, asi que si caminabas se te trepaban por el cuerpo en segundos. Tuve que hacer 3 intentos para lograr llegar a la carpa del banio, porque cada vez que intentaba el recorrido me llenaba de hormigas y tenia que volver al banio, bajarme el pantalon, sacarmelas todas y tratar de nuevo. Hubo un par que igual lograron meterse en la carpa, asi que tuve una noche muy interesante tratando de matarlas y sacarmelas de encima toda la noche.

Mascota/Mascot

Just before leaving Kenya I did the next mascot swap. I swapped with Frankie, an English girl on my tour. I gave her the toe spreader I got from Agustina and she gave me a pin. It looks like one of the ghosts from Pac Man, but if you turn it upside down it's actually a foot. It was part of a programme in Englad called WOW (Walk Once a Week) encouraging school children to walk to school once a week. So whoever did it got one of these pins. The one Frankie gave me was for the month of October, so it has a spiderweb drawing because of Halloween.

Justo antes de salir de Kenya hice el siguiente intercambio de mascota. Cambie con Frankie, una chica inglesa de mi tour. Le di el separador de dedos del pie que me habia dado Agustina y ella me dio un prendedor. Parece un fantasmita como los del Pac Man, pero si lo das vuelta en realidad es un pie. Era parte de un proyecto en Inglaterra llamado WOW (Walk Once a Week- Camina una Vez por Semana), incentivando a los chicos a que caminen al colegio una vez por semana. Y a los que lo hacian le daban uno de estos prendedores. El que me dio Frankie es del mes de Octubre, asi que tiene una tela de arana dibujada, por Halloween.

Kenya to/a Uganda

So, 1st of May at 6pm we had the pre-tour meeting at the hotel. We have 1 guide, 1 cook, 1 driver, and it's 11 of us: 4 Australians, 1 New Zealander, 3 English, 1 Canadian, 1 Mexican, and me. After the meeting some of us had dinner together at the hotel and then had an early night cause we head off early the next day.
2nd May we had breakfast at the hotel at 6:30am and then left. The truck we have is huge, really high and with seats for 24 passengers, so we each get a double seat, awesome! Another cool thing is it has lockers at the back to put the backpacks in, and they can be accessed from the inside, so convenient! Again, 2 lockers each:) It's the small things that matter. We left Nairobi, driving north up to a lookout point overlooking the Rift Valley. From there on to Lake Nakuru National Park. This lake is famous for its THOUSANDS of flamingoes. It's an amazing view from the distance, you see the lake and these huge pink coloured patches in different areas of the lake formed by the groups of flamingoes. We set up camp and then went for a 3 hour game drive: we went up to the lake to see the flamingoes from closer up, and then saw giraffes, zebras, white rhinos, impalas, other antelopes, buffalos (so exciting, last time I was in safari in Africa I only saw a buffalo's head sticking out of a bush, and a dead baby buffalo), a lion (a female lion, like 5 metres away from us, just laying on a tree top peacefully, undisturbed by the cars around her). We then had dinner and off to bed (AKA sleeping bag) early. There's 2 other girls traveling on their own, so we are gonna be rotating the tent sharing, so I shared a tent with Leanne (NZ) the first night.
3rd May. Second day, early start of course. We continued further north, stopped in a town along the way for a little while, and then went to a children's orphanage. We spent a few hours playing with the kids and had lunch there. We then drove up to Eldoret and spent the night there, I shared the tent with Megan (UK). At about 4:30am I woke up with a weird noise, right under my head. Couldn't figure out what it was, but it was some sort of animal. I thought an insect, so I flattened the tent with my hands pushing it away and felt a lump under the tent. Freaked out! So moved my head lower down and couldn't go back to sleep. The next day when we undid the tent we found a tiny baby bird there!! There was a fallen nest next to our tent, so the nest obviously fell down during the night, the bird crawled under the tent, and I squashed with my head (and my arms!!) and killed it!! I felt awful!! Worst thing is that it was still slightly alive but didn't have much longer to go...
4th May. We basically drove all day. Yep, that would be about it. We drove for about 4 hours, left Kenya, entered Uganda. We had lunch right after crossing the border, we stopped on the side of the road by a petrol station and ate on the lawn there. We arrived to our campsite in Kampala (Uganda's capital) at about 5:30pm. And that's where we are now, staying for the night here, I get a tent on my own tonight, and leaving tomorrow morning.

Asi que el 1 de mayo a las 6 de la tarde tuvimos nuestra reunion pre-tour en el hotel. Tenemos 1 guia, 1 cocinero, 1 conductor, y somos 11 en el tour: 4 australianos, 1 neozelandesa, 3 ingleses, 1 canadiense, 1 mejicano, y yo. Despues de la reunion parte del grupo cenamos juntos en el hotel y despues a dormir temprano porque empezamos temprano el tour manana.
2 de mayo. Desayunamos en el hotel a las 6:30 y nos fuimos. El camion que tenemos es enorme, re alto y con asientos para 24 pasajeros, asi que tenemos doble asiento todos, copado! Otra cosa muy buena es que tiene lockers atras para poner las mochilas y que se los puede abrir desde adentro del camion, tan practico! Lo mismo, 2 casilleros cada uno:) Son las pequenias cosas las que importan.
Nos fuimos de Nairobi, manejando hacia el norte hasta un mirador sobre el Valle Rift. De ahi al Parque Nacional Lago Nakuru. El lago es famoso por los MILES de flamingos. Es una vista espectacular desde la distancia, se ve el lago y se ven zonas rosadas enormes en distintas partes del lago formadas por los grupos de flamingos. Instalamos el campamento y despues nos fuimos a hacer avistaje de animales en el camion por 3 horas: fuimos hasta el lago a ver los flamingos mas de cerca, y vimos girafas, cebras, rinocerontes blancos, impalas, otros tipos de antilopes, bufalos (re emocionante, la ultima vez que estuve en Africa de safaru solo vi la cabeza de un bufalo asomandose por detras de un arbusto, y un bebe bufalo muerto), un leon (una leona, como a 5 metros de distancia de nosotros, acostada tranquilamente arriba de un arbol, sin inmutarse por los autos a su alrededor). Despues cenamos y nos fuimos a la cama ( o sea las bolsas de dormir) temprano. Hay 2 chicas mas que estan viajando solas, asi que vamos a rotar compartiendo las carpas, comparti la carpa con Leanne (de Nueva Zelanda) la primera noche.
3 de mayo. Segundo dia, empezamos temprano por supuesto. Seguimos mas hacia el norte, paramos en un pueblo en el camino un rato, y despues seguimos a un orfanato de chicos. Pasamos unas horas jugando con los chicos y almorzamos ahi. Despues manejamos hasta Eldoret y pasamos la noche ahi, comparti carpa con Megan (de Inglaterra). Como a las 4:30am me desperte con un ruido raro, justo abajo de mi cabeza. No pude descifrar que era, pero era algun tipo de animal. Pense que era algun insecto, asi que alise la carpa con mis manos, empujando hacia afuera, y senti un bulto abajo de la carpa. Me pegue un cagazo mal! Asi que movi mi cabeza mas hacia abajo y no me pude volver a dormir. Al dia siguiente cuando desarmamos la carpa encontramos un pajarito bebe ahi!! Habia un nido caido al lado de nuestra carpa, asi que obviamente el nido se cayo durante la noche, el pajarito se metio abajo de la carpa, y yo lo aplaste con mi cabeza (y con mis manos!!) y lo mate!! Me sentia re mal! U lo peor es que todavia estaba levemente vivo pero no le quedaba mucho tiempo de vida...
4 de mayo. Basicamente manejamos todo el dia. Si, eso lo resume bien. Manejamos mas o menos por 4 horas, nos fuimos de Kenya, entramos en Uganda. Almorzamos justo despues de cruzar la frontera, paramos en el costado de la ruta al lado de una estacion de servicio y comimos en el pasto ahi. Llegamos a nuestro lugar de camping en Kampala (la capital de Uganda) mas o menos a las 5:30pm. Y ahi es donde estamos ahora, nos quedamos aca esta noche, tengo carpa para mi sola hoy, y nos vamos manana a la manana.

Nairobbery/Nairobo

I'm in Africa!!! How fucking awesome, I LOVE this continent!!! I stayed at a hostel for a couple of nights, which was great, I met a group of really cool people. It was fascinating listening to them talk, most have been in Africa for at least a few months, and 1 for 12 years! So it's really interesting to hear them talk about politics and history of Africa, things I have no clue about, makes me feel so ignorant but really enjoying learning about it a bit.
Nairobi itself is no big deal... not much to do in the city really. Today I walked around the city for a few hours, had lunch in a little cafe (tried a few traditional dishes) and then walked to have a look at all the official buildings (parliament, president's house, etc etc)- they look crap, they are plain, old buildings, nothing special. I then walked past the tower in the city, but decided not to go up as there really isn't much to see anyway. I went into the Basilica for a while and walked around Uhuru Park.
Yesterday I went with an Argentinean guy and an Irish guy to the Giraffe Centre- tiny, you basically walk in, there's a platform, the giraffes come up to you, you feed them and pat them and hug them, and you also hold some food with your mouth and they take it off you by licking your face. Yuck but funny. And that's basically it, we saw 1 wild boar as well. There's lots of other things like that to do here in Nairobi- like the elephant orphanage and a National Park right in the city, but I preferred not to do these as I will have plenty of time in National Parks during the coming weeks.
Nairobi is known as Nairobbery- it's considered the most dangerous city in the world at the moment, even more than Johannesburg. So there's no walking out after dark, taxis everywhere, etc. But walking to and around the city today was fine, as long as it's during the day time and you don't walk with a camera in your hand or anything like that.
I moved to a hotel 200metres away from my hostel today, cause tomorrow I am leaving on an overland camping safari for 39 days, and it departs from that hotel. Only issue: it's still the wet season here, so it rains every day, so it will be a very interesting camping experience indeed. So 1 night in a hotel. I felt like I was in the Hilton today when I arrived, with my own bathroom and even a balcony! The bed sheets are dirty, but oh well, cant expect everything! I came back to visit the people from the hostel in the afternoon, and in about 1 hour I'll head back to the hotel cause at 6pm I am meeting the safari group.

Estoy en Africa!! Que alucinante!! Amo este continente!! Me quede en un hostel un par de noches, que estuvo buenisimo, conoci un grupo de gente muy buena onda. Fue fascinante escucharlos hablar, la mayoria esta en Africa hace por los menos algunos meses, y uno hace 12 anios! Asi que es re interesante escucharlos hablar sobre politica e historia de Africa, temas de los que no tengo ni idea, me hace sentir re ignorante pero me encanta estar aprendiendo un poco del tema.
Nairobi en si no es gran cosa... no hay mucho para hacer en la ciudad la verdad. Hoy camine por la ciudad unas horas, almorce en un barcito (probe algunos platos tradicionales) y despues camine a mirar los edificios oficiales (el parlamento, la casa del presidente, etc etc)- una cagada, son edificios viejos, basicos, nada especial. Despues pase por la torre en la ciudad, pero decidi no subir porque total no hay mucho que ver en la ciudad. Entre a la basilica un rato, y camine por el parque Uhuru.
Ayer fui con un argentino y un irlandes al Centro de las Girafas- minimo, basicamente entras, hay una plataforma, las girafas vienen, les das de comer, las tocas, las abrazas, y tambien te pones comida en la boca y te la sacan chupandote la cara. Un asco pero gracioso. Y eso es todo. Vimos 1 jabali tambien. Hay muchas cosas mas de ese estilo para hacer aca en Nairobi- el orfanato de elefantes, y un Parque Nacional justo en la ciudad, pero preferi no hacer esas cosas porque voy a tener tiempo de sobra en Parques Nacionales durante las proximas semanas.
Nairobi es conocida como Nairobbery (NaiRobo)- se la considera la ciudad mas peligrosa del mundo en estos momentos, incluso mas que Johannesburgo. Asi que nada de caminar despues que oscurece, taxi a todos lados, etc. Pero caminar a y alrededor de la ciudad hoy estuvo bien, siempre y cuando sea de dia y no andes con la camara de fotos en la mano ni nada asi.
Hoy me mude a un hotel a 200 metros de mi hostel, porque manana me voy en un safari acampando por tierra por 39 dias, y sale de ese hotel. Unico tema: todavia es la temporada de lluvias aca, asi que llueve todos los dias, asi que va a ser una experiencia acampando muy interesante. Asi que 1 noche en un hotel. Me senti como que estaba en el Hilton hoy cuando llegue, con mi propio banio y hasta balcon! Las sabanas estan sucias, pero bueno, no se puede pretender todo! A la tarde vine a visitar a la gente del hostel y en mas o menos 1 hora me vuelvo al hotel porque a las 6 nos encontramos con la gente del safari.

Plane Meals/ Comidas de Avion

I flew from New York to Nairobi (Kenya) via London, so that gave me a great opportunity for not 1, but 2 more plane meals, yay!
So, I had kosher food (Jewish) on the first flight, and Halal food (Muslim) on the second one. I think I'm allowed to change religions during my lifetime, right?
On my first flight I had a highly Jewish experience. Across the aisle there were 4 traditional orthodox Jews sitting- the men with the hat, curly long hair on the sides, the full attire, and the woman also dressed very traditionally and with a hat and wig as well. And I found myself watching a movie by the Coen Brothers, who happened to be very much about Jewish life, so when my meal came I felt like I was in a parallel universe almost. And I have to say, so far of all my plane meals, this one has been my favourite one. Included the supposed muffin which I took with me from the plane and when I got it out to eat in Nairobi it turned out it wasn't a muffin at all but a tuna sandwich! hahaha
The Halal food was good as well. But to be honest they fed me so much, 4 meals in total in 2 flights, so there was lots of things I couldn't even try, I was so full. But a big disappointment was when I saw that the equivalent of my little box of raisins, for other people was a Kit Kat chocolate! Spewing, I hated my life then.

Vole de Nueva York a Nairobi (Kenya) via Londres, asi que eso me dio una gran oportunidad para no 1, sino 2 comidas de avion, yay!
Asi que tuve comida kosher (judia) en el primer vuelo y comida halal (musulmana) en el segundo. Creo que tengo permitido cambiar de religion en mi vida, no?
En mi primer vuelo tuve una experiencia muy judia. Al otro lado del pasillo habia 4 judios ortodoxos sentados- los hombres con los sombreros y el pelo largo ondulado en los costados, toda la vestimenta, y la mujer tambien vestida bien tradicional y con sombrero y peluca tambien. Y me puse a ver una pelicula de los hermanos Coen, que resulto ser sobre una familia judia, asi que cuando me llego la comida me senti casi como que estaba en un universo paralelo. Y debo decir, hasta ahora de todas mis comidas de avion, esta fue my preferida. Incluyendo el supuesto budin que me lleve del avion y que cuando lo saque para comermelo en Nairobi resulto que no era un budin sino un sandwich de atun! hahaha
La comida Halal tambien estuvo buena. Pero para ser honesta me dieron tanto de comer, 4 comidas completas en 2 vuelos, asi que hubo muchas cosas que no pude ni probar, estaba re llena. Pero una gran desilusion fue cuando vi que el equivalente a mi cajita de pasas de uvas, para el resto de la gente era un chocolate Kit Kat! A las puteadas, odie mi vida en ese instante.

Mascot/Mascota

Time for mascot swap again! I've lost count of what number I'm up to by now... but I had the koala that Ana had given me in Vegas (which by the way was christened Walwa by an 11 year old girl I met in Washington DC).
I made the swap with Agustina. She gave me this.... don't know what it's called, but these things to put between the toes to open them up, you know, to paint the toe nails. Only that she bought them cause she wants to spread her toes apart because she is taking dancing lessons. And apparently spread-out toes are a good quality for a dancer to have! Hilarious girl she is! And they have cute little faces painted on, so I think it will be an awesome mascot!

Momento de cambiar de mascota otra vez! Perdi la cuenta de por que numero voy ya... pero tenia el Koala que Ana me habia dado en Las Vegas (que por cierto fue bautizado Walwa por una chica de 11 anios que conoci en Washington DC).
Hice el cambio con Agustina. Me dio un.... no se como se llama, pero esas cosas para ponerse entre los dedos de los pies para abrirlos, para pintarse las unas de los pies. Solo que ella se los compro porque se quiere separar los dedos de los pies porque esta tomando clases de danza. Y aparentemente tener dedos de los pies separados es una buena cualidad en una bailarina! Es un personaje! Y tienen caritas divinas pintadas, asi que creo que va a ser una mascota genial!

New York again/de nuevo

Back in new York. I love this city. I could live here!
So, back in New York, for almost 6 days. What did I do? Let's see...
Museums: MOMA, which is the Museum of Modern Art, awesome!! Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum, also excellent both.
I walked all along Brooklyn Bridge, it was a beautiful day, and the views of the city (Manhattan) from Brooklyn are great. It gives you a perspective of things, the Statue of Liberty is TINY when compared to the huge skyscrapers!! I walked around Wall Street area (and had a typical hot dog from a street vendor), and went to the World Financial Centre and the Museum on the 9/11 Memorial Renovation Site. I went up the Empire State Building. The view of the city is absolutely spectacular, it's awesome to see it in daytime but even better at nighttime, the lights are just incredibly beautiful.
I spent another day walking around Central Park. It's been said before, I know, but can't help myself: it's HUGE! It has baseball fields, lakes, ponds, lawns, a carrousel, even bloody traffic lights! I saw Strawberry Fields of course, the memorial to John Lennon, and right across the street from it the Dakota Building, where he was murdered.
On my last full day I finally went to the Statue of Liberty. It was supposed to be a rainy day, but the Statue of Libertad was all booked for weeks except for these 3 rainy days, so I chose to go the least rainy day according to the weather forecast. Turns out the weather forecast was wrong as they generally are, and it didn't rain at all, and even though it was overcast during much of the day, there were moments when it was actually sunny, so I was so lucky! Took heaps of pictures of course. I couldn't go all the way up to the top, to the crown (they are again allowing a very limited number of people to go up) cause that is booked for months, but I went up to the top of the pedestal on which the Statue of Liberty stands- and it's so small that in fact the pedestal itself is the same size as the Statue is! So I can say I got halfway up:)
On the 28th I met up with Floppy for lunch- she's a friend from Uni and after several failed attempts at meeting up in New York we managed to see each other at least for a couple of hours before I left for the airport, and I met her cute daughter Valentina.
And apart from that, hanging out with Agustina and her flatmates at night time, talking shit and watching weird movies:)

De vuelta en Nueva York. Amo esta ciudad, podria vivir aca!
Asi que de vuelta en Nueva York, por casi 6 dias. Que hice? A ver...
Museos: MOMA, que es el Museo de Arte Moderno, buenisimo!!! Museo Metropolitano de Arte, y el Museo Guggenheim, tambien los 2 buenisimos.
Camine todo a lo largo del Puente de Brooklyn, era un dia lindisimo y al vista de la ciudad (Manhattan) desde Brooklyn es lindisima. Te da una buena perspectiva, la Estatua de la Libertad es MINI a comparacion de los rascacielos gigantes!! Camine por la zona de Wall Street (y comi un tipico hot dog de un verdedor de la calle), y fui al World Financial Centre y al Museo de conmemoracion del 11 de Septiembre, con los planes de lo que van a hacer con el lugar. Subi al Empire State Building. La visa de la ciudad es totalmente espectacular, es increible verla de dia, pero aun mejor de noche, las luces son increiblemente hermosas.
Pase otro dia caminando por Central Park. Ya han dicho esto antes, lo se, pero no puedo evitarlo: es ENORME! Tiene canchas de baseball, lagos, lagunas, parques, una calesita, hasta semaforos!! Vi Strawberry Fields por supuesto, el memorial a John Lennon y cruzando la calle el edificio Dakota, donde lo mataron.
En mi ultimo dia entero, finalmente fui a la Estatua de la Libertad. Se suponia que iba a ser un dia de lluvia, pero la Estatua de la Libertad estaba todo bookeada por semanas excepto por estos 3 dias de lluvia, asi que elegi para ir el dia menos lluvioso segun el pronostico del tiempo. Resulto que el pronostico del tiempo estuvo equivocado como suele suceder y no llovio para nada, y aunque estuvo nublado durante la mayor parte del dia hubo momentos cuando hasta salio el sol, asi que tuve mucha suerte! Saque un monton de fotos obviamente. No pude subir arriba de todo, hasta la corona (estan otra vez dejando gente subir arriba de todo, pero numero muy limitado) porque eso esta bookeado por meses, pero subi hasta la parte de arriba del pedestal donde esta parada la Estatua de la Libertad- y es tan chica que de hecho el pedestal es del mismo tamano que la Estatua! Asi que puedo decir que subi hasta la mitad:)
El 28 me encontre con Floppy a almorzar- es una amiga de la facultad y despues de varios intentos fallidos de encontrarnos en Nueva York logramos vernos al menos por un par de horas antes de que me fuera para el aeropuerto, y conoci a su hija Valentina, divina.
Y ademas de eso, pase tiempo con Agustina y sus companeros de casa durante las noches, boludeando y mirando peliculas extranas:)

Washington DC

19th April: I woke up early and went to Matt´s house, my couchsurfing host. We had arranged that I had to be there before 9am when he goes to work, but turns out he was sick so having the day off work. Bernie was there, the friend of Matt´s visiting him and staying with him last night. The 3 of us went out for breakfast and then to the Air and Space Museum (they have the original plane with which the Wright Brothers flew for the very first time ever!!), and after that Bernie left for the bus station, Matt went home cause he wasn´t feeling well, and I walked around town. Old Post Office, now turned into a shopping centre-food court, had lunch there, awesome building, went up to the top of the tower for a view of the city (for free!) After that I walked past the Ronald Reagan building (massive, also has places to eat but not sure if tourists are allowed inside...). I then went to the White House Visitor´s Centre- I found out I couldn´t visit the White House cause it´s gotta be organised months in advance, but the Visitor Centre was cool enough, like a museum of the White House. I then walked along The Mall area (the big grass area between the Memorials and the Capitol, and with all the museums lined on both side roads all along- there´s about 11 Smithsonian Museums here, and they are all for free). I went to the Korean War Memorial and again to the Lincoln Memorial (this time to see it in daytime and to the small museum at the bottom which I hadn´t noticed before). I then walked over the bridge to Arlington- it´s a bit of a long walk but it was so worth it! The Arlington Cemetery is on the other side- the home of the famous image of thousands and thousands of white tombstones (I always thought they were crosses, but no, they are tombstones)- the Kennedy´s gravesites and the Unknown Soldier (with its change of guard) are the highlights, but just walking around and looking at the tombstones spreading out everywhere is an overwhelming sight. I walked back over the bridge, it was nightime already by the time I got back into the city. Got some dinner, and then walked to Matt´s house- he lives a few blocks away from the US Capitol, which was perfect cause I could see it lit up at nightttime when I walked back. Chatted a bit with Matt and then off to bed.
20th April: Woke up early, and by 8:15 I was lining up for tickets for the guided tour of the US Capitol, got the first tour, then went to the House of Representatives and sat in on that for a while, then walked over to the Library of Congress and took a guided tour there as well (supposedly 40 minutes which turned into 1:10mins at which point I left cause the guy was still talking), then back to the US Capitol to see the Senate (supposedly they were being on session as from 12:30, I got there at about 1:15 and they were on their lunch break, back at 2pm). So I had lunch, then to the Senate. Then went to the Supreme Court, walked around the building and sat on a talk about it. By this time it was like 4 pm and I had spent ALL DAY in these 3 buildings only!! But it was awesome. I walked over to Union Station, then past the front of the Capitol with its fountains and sculptures. Got back to Matt´s house, he had had the day off work again, still sick. Chatted with Matt for a few hours, and then with his flatmate Leo, and to bed.
21st April. Rain. Miserable day. So I went to the Smithsonian main building, ¨The Castle¨, until the museums opened, turns out it´s a museum itself as well! I went to the Holocaust Museum WOW! I was there from 10am until 3:50pm... and I could have stayed but was exhausted and starving by that time. Very moving, amazing experience. After lunch at 4pm I went to the Hirshhorm Museum- modern art, small but cool. Then to the National Archives- saw the original Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights. From there on to the Reynolds Centre, which houses both the National Portrait Gallery and the American Art Museum- HUGE building, I only had an hour there before it closed, so just had a general look around some sections of it. I then went to a coffee shop near Matt´s place and had a nice hot chocolate, waiting for him to come back from car shopping- he bought a car (same cute blue colour like my ex car), and was really excited about it, so we went for a ride in it and for dinner.
22nd April: Matt dropped me off at the Washington Memorial on his was to work (not really on the way, but he was more than happy to go for a ride), I queued up from 8:45am to 9:15am to get a ticket to go up the top, and when there were 4 people left in front of me they ran out of tickets for the day! ARGH!! So instead I walked all around the Tidal Basin area- Jefferson Memorial (and in the distance we saw a helicopter landing on the White House, which we assumed was Obama, so everyone was again yelling excitedly going ¨Oh my God, I can´t believe we are so close to Obama¨... like 2kms away probably haha), Roosevelt Memorial, and back to the Lincoln Memorial again, just cause that´s where the path leads. After that I got a taxi up to Georgetown area- rich area, nice shops, fancy and posh. Walked from there to Dupont Circle- fountain with shops around, people having their lunch there on their break from work. Went to the Zoo (also free), saw 1 of the cute cute pandas which were a gift from China (the other one is pregnant and not ¨on display¨ at the moment). I then got a subway to U-street area, Leo had recommended me to eat in a place there, had to try the traditional chilli dogs they serve. And from there on to the bus station, and left at 3:30pm back to New York!
Tips for Facu: US Capitol no food or drinks allowed AT ALL inside building, they make you throw out everything at the entrance. Museums say the same, but they never made me throw out my water bottle in my bag. Line up early for the US Capitol, 8:15 was good for me, they start giving tickets at 8:30 and first tour is at 8:50. Make sure you get ¨International Gallery passes¨ for the House of Representatives and for the Senate, 2 separate passes, for free, at the top floor of the US Capitol, do it when you arrive. Free views of the city from Old Post Office Building. You can go up the Washington Memorial, which is much higher, free tickets, I couldn´t cause they ran out of tickets by 9:15am (I started queueing up at 8:45am)- BUT you can get these tickets in advance online, but you have to pay something (I think not much). If you want to go to the White House you have to book it between 2-6 months in advance through the Embassy (they say it´s worth it). All Smithsonian Museums for free. Make sure you see Memorials lit up at nighttime, but the city is DEAD at night, so try to see them at night but not too late, as soon as it gets dark. Holocaust Museum- for free but they give time-allocated tickets, go early and queue up (I got there at 10 which is the time they open and my allocated time was 11:15, but they have other galleries you can see before that allocated time anyway).
Tips for Facu for New York: they are allowing a limited number of people up to the Crown of the Statue of Liberty again- you gotta buy tickets online as soon as possible if you want to do it, it´s booked up until June already! I got the second next best thing, which you go up halfway, and also booked for a few weeks already. Not expensive. MOMA free Fridays 4pm to 8pm (LONG queues, go earlier than 4!!). Guggenheim pay what you wish Saturdays 5:45 to 7:45pm (just enough time to see it all, I got there about 15-30mins earlier and it was ok the line). Met and Natural History Museums- the entrance fee is only ¨recommended price¨, in reality you can always pay what you wish for these 2 museums.

19 de Abril: me desperte temprano y fui a lo de Matt, mi anfitrion de couchsurfing. Habiamos arreglado que tenia que estar en su casa antes de las 9am que se va al trabajo, pero resulto que estaba enfermo asi que no fue a trabajar. Estaba con Bernie, el amigo que estaba de visita y se quedo en su casa anoche. Fuimos a desayunar los 3 y despues al Museo de Aire y Espacio (tienen el avion original con el que los Hermanos Wright volaron por primerisima vez!!), y despues de eso Bernie se fue a la estacion de bus, Matt se fue a la casa porque no se sentia bien, y yo me fui a recorrer la ciudad. El Antiguo Correo, ahora convertido en un shopping con patio de comidas, almorce ahi, buenisimo el edificio, subi arriba de la torre para tener una vista de la ciudad (gratis!). Despues de eso pase por el edificio Ronald Reagan (gigante, tambien tienen lugares para comer pero no se si dejan entrar a los turistas adentro). Despues fui al Centro de Visitas de la Casa Blanca- me entere que no puedo entrar a la Casa Blanca porque hay que organizarlo con meses de anticipacion, pero el Centro de Visitas estaba bueno, como un museo de la Casa Blanca. Despues camine por al zona de The Mall (la zona de pasto entre el Capitolio y los Memoriales, y llena de museos todo a lo largo en las calles de los costados- hay como 11 museos Smithsonian aca, y todos son gratis). Fui al Memorial de la Guerra de Korea y otra vez al Memorial de Lincoln (esta vez para verlo de dia y al museito que hay abajo que antes no me habia dado cuenta que estaba). Despues cruce el puente caminando hasta Arlington- es una caminata larga pero re valio la pena! El cementerio Arlington esta del otro lado- el lugar de las famosas fotos de miles y miles de lapidas blancas (yo siempre habia pensado que eran cruces, pero no, son lapidas)- las tumbas de los Kennedy y el Soldado Desconocido (con su cambio de guardia) son lo destacado, pero simplemente caminar y ver las lapidas que se extienden por todos lados es una imagen impresionante. Camine de nuevo sobre el puente, se hizo de noche ya para cuando llegue a la ciudad. Cene y despues fui a la casa de Matt- vive a un par de cuadras del Capitolio, que es excelente porque lo pude ver todo iluminado de noche cuando volvia. Charle un rato con Matt y despues a dormir.
20 de Abril: me desperte temprano y a las 8:15 ya estaba haciendo la cola para los tickets para la visita guiada del Capitolio, hice el primer tour, y despues fui a la Camara de Representantes y me quede ahi un rato, despues fui a la Biblioteca del Congreso y tambien hice una visita guiada ahi (supuestamente 40 minutos que se conviertieron en 1 hora y 10 minutos, y ahi me fui porque el tipo seuia hablando), despues de vuelta al Capitolio a ver el Senado (supuestamente empezaban a las 12:30 del mediodia, yo llegue tipo 1:15pm y estaban en receso de almuerzo, de vuelta a las 2pm). Asi que almorce, y despues al Senado. Despues fui al edificio de la Corte Suprem, di vueltas por el edificio y escuche una charla explicativa. A esta altura ya eran las 4 de la tarde y me habia pasado TODO EL DIA en estos 3 edificios solo!! Pero estuvo buenisimo. Camine a las estacion Union y despues por enfrente del Capitolio con sus fuentes y esculturas. Volvi a lo de Matt, se habia tomado el dia del laburo de nuevo, sigue enfermo. Hable con Matt unas horas, y despues con su companero de departamento Leo, y despues a dormir.
21 de abril. Lluvia. Dia horrible. Asi que fui al edificio principal de Smithsonian, ¨El Castillo¨ a esperar que los museos abrieran, resulto que es un museo tambien ahi! Fui al Museo del Holocausto WOW! Estuve ahi de 10am hasta 3:50pm... y podria haberme quedado mas pero estaba agotada y muerta de hambre a esa altura. Muy conmovedor, una experiencia increible. Despues de almorzar a las 4pm fui al Museo Hirshhorm- arte moderna, chiquito pero copado. Despues a los Archivos Nacionales- vi el original de la Constitucion, la Declaracion de la Independencia, y los Derechos... como se llame. De ahi al Centro Reynolds, que tiene la Galeria Nacional de Retratos y el Museo de Arte Americano (lease, estadounidense), edificio GIGANTE. Solo tuve 1 hora ahi hasta que cerro, asi que di una mirada general en algunas secciones. Despues fui a un cafe cerca de la casa de Matt y me tome un rico chocolate caliente, esperandolo a Matt que vuelva de haber ido a comprarse un auto- se compro un auto (mismo color azul lindo como tenia mi ex auto) y estaba re chocho, asi que nos fuimos a dar una vuelta en el auto y a cenar.
22 de Abril: Matt me dejo en el Memorial a Washington de camino a su laburo (no le quedaba de camino en verdad, pero estaba feliz de ir a dar una vuelta en el auto), hice cola de 8:45 a 9:15 am para conseguir un ticket para poder subir arriba de todo, y cuando quedaban 4 personas enfrente mio se quedaron sin tickets por el dia! ARRRGH! Camine desde ahi a Dupont Circle- fuentes con gente alrededor, gente almorzando en su hora de almuerzo del trabajo. Fui al zoologico (tambien gratis), vi a 1 de los 2 pandas divinos que fueron un regalo de China (la otra esta embarazada y no ¨en exhibicion¨). Despues me tome un subte a la Calle U, Leo me habia recomendado que coma en un lugar ahi, tenia que probar los hotdogs chilli tradicionales que hacen ahi! Y de ahi a la estacion de bus, me tome un bus a las 3:30 de vuelta a New York!
Consejos para Facu: en el Capitolio no permiten bebidas ni comida PARA NADA, te hacen todo en la entrada. En los museos dicen lo mismo, pero nunca me hicieron tirar la bottela de agua de mi mochila ahi. Hace cola temprano para el Capitolio, 8:15 estuvo bien en mi caso, empiezan a dar los tickets a las 8:30 y el primer tour es a las 8:50. Asegurate de pedir los ¨Pases para Galeria Internacionales¨ para la Sala de Representantes y el Senado, 2 pases separados, gratis, en el piso de arriba del Capitolio, hacelo al llegar. Vista gratis de la ciudad del edificio del Antiguo Correo. Podes subir al Memorial de Washington que es mucho mas alto, tickets gratis, yo no pude porque se quedaron sin tickets a las 9:15am (empece a hacer la cola a las 8:45) - PERO podes conseguir estos tickets por adelantado en internet, hay que pagar algo en ese caso (pero creo que no mucho). Si queres ir a la Casa Blanca lo tenes que reservar por adelantado, como con 2-6 meses de anticipacion por medio de la Embajada (dicen que vale la pena). Todos los museos Smithsonian son gratis. Asegurate de ver todos los Memoriales iluminados de noche, pero la ciudad esta MUERTA de noche, asi que velos de noche pero no muy tarde, apenas anochece. Museo del Holocasuto- gratis pero dan tickets con horario, anda temprano y hace cola (yo llegue a las 10am que es la hora que abren y mi horario que me dieron era para las 11:15am, pero igual hay otras galerias que podes ver antes de esa hora).
Consejos para Facu para Nueva York: estan permitiendo un numero muy limitado de personas para subir a la corona de la Estatua de la Libertad- tenes que comprar tickets por internet lo antes posible si lo vas a querer hacer, esta todo completo hasta Junio ya! Yo compre la siguiente mejor opcion, que subis hasta la mitad, y tambien ya esta todo lleno por semanas. No es caro. MOMA gratis los viernes de 4pm a 8pm (colas LARGAS, anda antes de las 4pm!!). Giggenheim ¨paga lo que quieras¨ los sabados de 5:45pm a 7:45pm (el tiempo justito para poder verlo todo, yo llegue tipo 15-30minutos antes y la cola estaba aceptable). El Met y el Museo de Historia Natural- el precio es solo ¨sugerido¨, en realidad siempre podes pagar lo que quieras por estos 2 museos.

Washington DC First Night- Primera Noche

I got to Washington at about 3pm, got a bus to my hostel, just for 1 night. I´m gonna be couchsurfing as from tomorrow, but my host had a friend staying with him tonight so he could just host me from tomorrow onwards. The hostel was far out of the city, about 30mins by bus, cause everything else was fully booked, so I got a bus back to the city. I walked around, looked at the White House and other governmente buildings from outside, and even saw Obama´s 2 daughters in the garden of the White House with the dog. Americans where funny: they were all yelling so excited at them, waving, really like groupies, saying ¨Oh my God, Oh my God, there´s Bow!¨ (the dog haha).
I then walked over to the Vietnam War Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial- WOW! And it looks even more impressive at nighttime! Looked at the famous reflecting pool, with the Obelisk (Washington Memorial ) at the other end of it. It was very moving to stand on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the very spot where Dr Matin Luther King gave his ¨I have a Dream¨ speech, and seeing the pictures of how when he did it the whole area all the way up to Washington Memorial was full of people listening to him, WOW! I then walked to the World War II Memorial and the Washington Memorial, all beautiful at night, and walked past the White House again to see it lit up. Dinner and then back to the hostel for the night.

Llegue a Washington tipo 3 de la tarde, me tome un bus a mi hostel, solo por una noche. Voy a hacer couchsurfing a partir de manana, pero mi anfitrion tenia un amigo quedandose con el esta noche, asi que solo me puede alojar a partir de manana. El hostel quedaba lejos de la ciudad, como a 30minutos en bondi, porque todo el resto estaba lleno, asi que me tome un bus de vuelta al centro. Camine, mire la Casa Blanca y otros edificios del gobierno desde afuera, y hasta vi a las 2 hijas de Obama en el jardin de la Casa Blanca con el perro Los americanos eran muy graciosos: estaban todos gritandoles y saludando re excitados, re fanaticos, diciendo ¨Dios Mio, Dios Mio, ahi esta Bow¨! (el perro haha).
Despues camine al Memorial de la Guerra de Vietnam y el Memorial a Lincoln- wow! Y es todavia mas impresionante de noche! Vi la famosa Pileta rectangular y el Obelisco (Memorial a Washington) en la otra punta. Fue muy emotivo estar parada en los escalones del Memorial a Lincoln en el exacto lugar donde el Dr Martin Luther King dio su discurso ¨Yo tengo un suenio¨, y ver las fotos de como cuando dio el discurso toda el area llegando hasta el Memorial a Washington estaba llena de gente escuchandolo, WOW! Despues camine al Memorial a la 2da Guerra Mundial y al Memorial a Washington, todos lindisimos de noche, y pase de nuevo por la Casa Blanca para verla iluminada. Cena y de vuelta al hostel a dormir.

A few hours in NY- Unas pocas horas en NY

Sunday 18th April. I woke up early, and at 8:30am I was at a church in Harlem. It was awesome, listening to the Gospel singing, and the people screaming, dancing, clapping and answering back to the preacher (who was also amazing himself, SO into it!). After that I caught a bus to Washington DC, leaving at 10:30am.

Domingo 18 de abril. Me desperte temprano, y a las 8:30am estaba en una iglesia en Harlem. Fue alucinante, escuchar cantando Gospel, y la gente gritando, bailando, aplaudiendo y contestandole al tipo que predicaba (que tambien era increible el, estaba TAN metido en el sermon!) Despues de eso me tome un bus hacia Washington DC, salio a las 10:30am.

Boston, the city of students and Independence- Boston, la ciudad de los estudiantes y la Independencia

I always knew that Boston was a city full of students, but I never knew how relevant it had been in the Independence of the USA from the British. I learnt a lot about history here, I would have never expected it! Lots of revolutionary thoughts and actions took place in Boston, which resulted in their Independence. The Declaration of Independence was signed here in 1776.
I got to Boston on the 14th April at night. Couchsurfing here, so I went to Jeff´s house, my host. Lovely guy, he was really nice. 10 minutes after I arrived we went out to a bar, to the Boston weekly CS meeting. Really cool, I had never been to a couchsurfing meeting before, it was really fun to meet the CS people there!
15th April. Sightseeing begins. New city, new things to explore:) I walked around the parks near where Jeff lives: Fenway and Back Bay park, very peaceful and beautiful. Then I went to see the Symphony Hall, and across the road a MASSIVE building caught my atention. Turns out it was a Christ Church of Science or something like that... I took a guided tour of the stunning building and they made it very clear that they had nothing to do with Scientology. But they do believe in cure of illnesses and broken bones via prayer and not going to Drs or using medication! I used their library for free internet, so it was a very positive visit after all. I then went to Copley Square: Public Library (just for a visit, didn´t use their internet), Trinity Church, Hancock Building (same guy as the Hancock Building in Chicago I think, but they don´t allow tourists up the top here). I then walked around the beautiful lovely Public Garden, and then did the Black Heritage Trail walk in Beacon Hill area. I went into not 1, but the 2 Cheers bars (you know, from the TVseries Cheers). Apparently 1 is the original, and then after the success of the TV show they built another one copying it. But this second one is not just 1, it´s got 3 floors and on each floor they made the exact same replica bar apparently... I didn´t check, 1 floor was enough for me. Then went to Quincy Markets for dinner, and back to Jeff´s place, he was out, so I just chilled and had a quiet early night.
16th April: Rain and cold. Yuck. Luckily Jeff lent me an umbrella (I left my umbrella and my waterproof jacket in my big backpack in NY at Agustina´s place and travelled with only my daypack to Boston). I did the Freedom Trail walk all day, and a few more stops along the way as well, which was awesome. I did a guided tour of the State House, went into Boston Athenaeum (a very posh and uptight library, pretty pretencious), the Park Street Church, the Granary Burying Grounds next to it, Kings Chapel also with its burying ground, went to the First Public School in Boston which now is used for private companies with its statue of Benjamin Franklin, spent some time in the Old South Meeting House learning a lot of history, I went to the site of the Boston Massacre (5 people were killed by the police), Fanueil Hall, USS Constitution (an old ship), Bunker Hill monument (the place where the first battle of Independence took place). After that I went back to the starting place, Boston Common, the first public park, and walked around it despite the rain. Walked around Chinatown a bit and then back to Jeff´s place. We stayed up until ridiculously late watching movies and talking, including a ¨slightly fucked up korean movie¨ which was great.
17th: Woke up late, went to Chinatown for lunch, and from there got a bus back to New York. I got to NY at about 9pm, went to Agustina´s place for the night.

Siempre supe que Boston era una ciudad llena de estudiantes, pero nunca supe toda la relevancia que habia tenido en la Independencia de USA de los ingleses. Aprendi mucho de historia aca, nunca me lo hubiera esperado! Muchos pensamientos y hechos revolucionarios pasaron en Boston, que resultaron en la Independencia. La Declaracion de la Independencia fue firmada aca en 1776
Llegue a Boston el 14 de abril a la noche. Couchsurfing aca, asi que fui a lo de Jeff, mi anfitrion. Divino, re buena onda. A los 10 minutos de llegar fuimos a un bar, a la reunion semanal de Couchsurfing de Boston. Muy copado, nunca habia estado en una reunion de CS antes, estuvo re bueno conocer a la gente de CS de aca!
15 de abril. Comienza el turismo. Ciudad nueva, cosas nuevas que explorar:) Camine por los parques cerca de donde vive Jeff: Fenway y Back Bay, re tranquilo y lindo. Despues fui a ver el edifcio de la Sinfonica, y cruzando la calle veo un edificio MASIVO que me llamo la atencion. Resulto que es una Iglesia de Ciencia de Cristo o algo asi... hice un tour guiada del edifcio impresionante y me explicaron bien claramente que no tienen nada que ver con la Scientologia (la de Tom Cruise). Pero creen en la curacion de enfermedades y huesos rotos por medio de rezar y no van al medico ni toman medicamentos! Use su biblioteca para internet gratis, asi que fue una visita positiva despues de todo. Despues fui a la plaza Copley: la Biblioteca Publica (solo a visitar, no use internet ahi), la Iglesia Trinity, el Edificio Hancock (el mismo tipo que el del Edificio Hancock de Chicago creo. pero aca no permiten que los turistas suban). Despues camine por el lindisimo y divino Jardin Publico, y despues hice la Caminata de la Tradicion Negra en el area de Beacon Hill. Entre no a 1, sino a los 2 bares de Cheers (de la serie Cheers). Aparentemente 1 es el original, y despues del exito de la serie de television construyeron otro mas copiandolo. Pero este segundo no es solo 1, tiene 3 pisos y en cada piso hicieron la exacta misma replica del bar parece... no lo verifique, 1 piso fue suficiente para mi. Despues fui al Mercado Quincy a cenar, y de vuelta a lo de Jeff, el no estaba, asi que me relaje y tuve una noche tranqui.
16 de abril: lluvia y frio. Yuck. Por suerte Jeff me presto un paraguas (deje mi paraguas y mi impermeable en la mochila grande en lo de Agustina en NY y viaje solo con mi mochila de mano a Boston). Hice la Caminata de la Libertad todo el dia, y algunas paradas mas por el camino, que estuvo espectacular. Hice un tour guiado de la Casa del Estado, fui al Athenaeum de Boston (una Biblioteca paqueta y finola, bastante pretenciosa), la Iglesia de la Calle Park, el cementerio al lado, la Capilla Kings tambien con su cementerio, fui a la Primera Escuela Publica de Boston que ahora el edificio lo usan empresas privadas, con su estatua de Benjamin Franklin, pase tiempo en la Antigua Casa de Reuniones del Sur aprendiendo mucho de historia, fui al lugar de la Masacre de Boston (donde policias mataron a 5 personas), el Hall Faneuil, USS Constitution (un barco antiguo), el monumento de Bunker Hill (el lugar donde fue la primera batalla de la Independencia). Despues de ahi fui de nuevo al punto de comienzo, Boston Common, el primer parque publico, y camine por ahi a pesar de la lluvia. Camine por Chinatown un rato y despues a lo de Jeff. Nos quedamos despiertos hasta ridiculamente tarde mirando peliculas y hablando, incluida una ¨levemente extrana pelicula koreana¨ buenisima.
17: me desperte tarde, fui a Chinatwon a almorzar y de ahi me tome un bus de vuelta a NY. Llegue a NY tipo 9 de la noche, y fui a lo de Agustina.

I got to New York in the afternoon. Straight on the airport metro and then onto the real metro into the city. So after more than 2 hours after landing I finally emerged in the middle of New York. FUCKING NEW YORK! I can't believe it, I'M IN NEW YORK! I've always wanted to come to New York, I have memories of saying I wanted to see New York and go hangliding while wearing my kindergarden pinafore. I went hangliding a couple of years ago, so it was just New York left. AWESOME New York. Getting off the subway felt like a dream, actually my first few days here felt like a dream, unbelievable! Everything is famous, every place and sight is famous, even if I had never been here before. Yellow taxis, subway signs, famous buildings, names of neighbourhoods, everything seems familiar, where do I start from...?

So, there I am in fucking awesome New York. Got a hostel, dropped my bag, went for a walk. First classic: I had a New York style pizza slice:) (those huge slices that don't fit in the paper plates they come in and can't be eaten with only one hand, so you gotta fold them in half longwise to eat them). I then started walking around, but it started raining, so decided to go back to the hostel and have an early night. As it turned out I ended up hanging out with the people staying at the hostel for hours, so it wasn't an early night after all.

Next day I woke up early, checked out of the hostel and moved to the Brooklyn area. Explanation: staying with Agustina, an argentinean girl who has been living in NY for about 4 months. How do I know her? I don't actually. But turns out her father is a client of my grandfather's, and a few days ago my grandfather and my mother were talking to him... and who knows how one thing led to another and there you have it, I'm told to call Agustina to go and stay with her. So I called her last night and arranged to move in the next day. So I went over to her place and met some of her flatmates, it's 6 of them from different countries, all really nice and Agustina is great. I stayed there for a couple of hours chatting and then headed into the city. I took the free ferry to Staten Island, with views of the Statue of Liberty on the way (I saw THE Statue of Liberty, can't believe it!!!) and walked around Staten Island for a while (Past Yankees Stadium). Back to the city, and I walked around the southern tip of Manhattan- Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Battery Park (gorgeous views), walked past Trinity Church, saw Ground Zero (the place where the Twin Towers/World Trade Centre used to be). Then walked up along Broadway Avenue, up to Washington Square and saw Washington Arch. There I met up with Sole (Luli's sister, from Chicago, who is in NY for a couple of days) and with a friend of Sole's also called Agustina. We went to Judson Church and watched a dance performance and then had dinner in Little Italy. I met up with Agustina at the metro station, and she was with a friend, Carmen, and the 3 of us went back to Agustina's place for the night.

Next day: up early, and spent all day walking around Midtown area, the area with the wonderfully high skyscrapers. Madison Square Garden (they were filming a movie, had about 50 guys dressed as cops), the Post Office, walked along 7th Avenue (Fashion District area). And then I got to Times Square! WOW! THE Times Square! The place where New Year's Eve massive party takes place, with the ball going down, and all the giant TV screens. I went to the M&M's World and the Hershey's one- disappointingly neither one gave any free samples. Carnegie Hall, City Centre and down 5th Avenue, yes again: THE 5th Avenue!! I went into St Patrick's Cathedral, then into the Rockerfeller Centre Building (what an awesome, massive, impressive building, with its garden, square, flags, and ice skating rink!) I went back to Times Square and queued up for the half price tickets for Broadway shows, and met up with Agustina there. We got tickets for the musical Chicago- not our first choice, but still cool. She then left for work and I walked around cute little Bryant Park (with people playing chess, bocce, ping pong) and went to the public Library (oh yeah, free internet!), and past THE Chrysler Building. After that, tour of the United Nations Building: wow... being in that room, where so many decisions are made by the world leaders, that same room which I've seen so many times in movies and in the news, it gave me chills, it was really moving. Then, I went to THE Grand Central Station- amazing, again... seeing THE clock and THE main hall. And they even have a small museum in it, incredible!! After that I went back to Broadway Avenue and there met up with Agustina in the theatre and saw Chicago. It was great, awesome music, cool dancing, a bit disappointing the small production, was expecting something bigger and more spectacular for Broadway.

The next morning I hang out with Agustina, chatting for a couple of hours, and then went to the city. I walked around THE Soho, how awesome!! and Tribeca area, and along the Hudson River, and then I got a bus in the afternoon, leaving to Boston. But: NY, I'll be back!

Llegue a Nueva York a la tarde. Directo al subte del aeropuerto y de ahi al subte normal a la ciudad. Asi que mas de 2 horas despues de haber aterrizado finalmnte sali a la superficie en el medio de Nueva York. NUEVA YORK!! No lo puedo creer, estoy en NUEVA YORK!! Siempre quise venir a Nueva York, tengo recuerdos de decir que queria ir a Nueva York y volar en aladelta teniendo mi delantal de jardin de infantes puesto. Hice aladelta hace un par de anios, asi que solo me faltaba Nueva York. Nueva York ALUCINANTE! Cuando sali del subte fue como un suenio, de hecho mis primeros dias enteros fueron como un suenio, increible! Todo es famoso, cada lugar es famoso, aunque no estuve nunca antes aca. Taxis amarillos, carteles del subte, edificios famosos, el nombre de los barrios, todo parece conocido, por donde empiezo...?

Asi que ahi estoy, en la increible Nueva York. Consegui un hostel, deje mi mochila, sali a caminar. Primera cosa clasica: comi una porcion de pizza estilo Nueva York:) (esas porciones tan gigantes que no entran en el plato de carton que te dan, ni se pueden comer con una sola mano, entonces la manera de comerla es doblarla a la mitad a lo largo). Despues empece a dar una vuelta caminando pero empezo a llover, asi que decidi volver al hostel e irme a dormir temprano. Al final como resultaron las cosas me quede charlando con la gente que estaba en el hostel asi que resulto no ser una noche temprana al final.

Al dia siguiente me levante temprano, me fui del hotel, y me mude a la zona de Brooklyn. Explicacion: me voy a quedar con Agustina, una chica argentina que vive en NY hace 4 meses. Como laconozco? No la conozco. Pero resulta que su papa es cliente de mi abuelo, y hace unos dias mi mama y mi abuelo estaban charlando con el... y no se como una cosa llevo a la otra, y de repente, me avisan que la llame a Agustina para ir a quedarme con ella. Asi que la llame anoche y arregle para mudarme al dia siguiente. Asi que fui a su casa y conoci a algunas de las personas con las que vive, son 6 en total de diferentes paises, todos divinos y Agustina una genia. Me quede ahi charlando un par de horas y despues fui para el centro. Me tome el ferry gratis hasta la isla Staten Island, con vistas de la Estatua de la Libertad en el camino (vi LA Estatua de la Libertad, no puedo creerlo!!) y camine por Staten Island un rato (pase por el estadio de baseball de los Yankees). De vuelta a la ciudad y camine por la punta sur de Manhattan- el memorial a los veteranos de guerra de Vietnam, el parque Battery (vistas buenisimas), pase por la Iglesia Trinity, vi el lugar de Ground Cero (el lugar donde las Torres Gemelas-World Trade Centre solian estar). Despues camine a lo largo de la Avenida Broadway, hasta la plaza Washington, con el Arco de Washington. Ahi me encontre con Sole (la hermana de Luli de Chicago, que esta en NY por un par de dias) y con una amiga de Sole que tambien se llama Agustina. Fuimos a la Iglesia Judson y vimos una presentacion de baile y despues fuimos a cenar a Little Italy (zona italiana). Me encontre con Agustina en la estacion de metro y estaba con una amiga, Carmen, y las 3 fuimos a dormir a lo de Agustina.

Dia siguiente: me desperte temprano y me pase todo el dia caminando por la zona Midtown, la zona con los rascacielos maravillosamente altos. Madison Square Garden (estaban filmando una pelicula, tenian como 50 tipos vestidos de policias), la oficina postal, camine por la 7ma Avenida (el Distrito de la Moda). Y despues fui a Times Square. WOW! EL Times Square!! El lugar donde se lleva a cabo la fiesta masiva de Anio Nuevo, con la pelota gigante que baja, y las pantallas gigantes. Fui al Mundo de M&M y al local de Hershey´s- gran desilusion que ninguno daba muestras gratis. Carnegie Hall, City Centre, y baje por la 5ta Avenida, si, de nuevo, LA 5ta Avenida!!! Fui a la Catedral de San Patricio y despues al edificio del Rockerfeller Centre (que edificio tan gigante, impactante, con sus jardines, plaza, banderas, y pista de patinaje sobre hielo!). Volvi a Times Square y hice cola para los tickets de mitad de precio para los shows de Broadway, y me encontre con Agustina ahi. Compramos tickets para el show Chicago- no era nuestra primera preferencia, pero igual copado. Ella despues se fue a laburar y yo camine por el divino y chiquito parque Bryant (con la gente jugando al ajedrez, a las bochas, al ping pong) y fui a la Biblioteca Nacional (si, si, internet gratis!) y pase por EL Edificio Chrysler. Despues de eso, tour del edificio de las Naciones Unidas: wow... estar en ese cuarto, donde tantas decisiones de los lideres mundiales son tomadas, el mismo cuarto que vi tantas veces en peliculas y en las noticias, me dio escalofrios, fue muy emocionante. Despues fui a LA Gran Estacion Central- increible de nuevo, ver EL reloj y EL hall principal. Y hasta tienen un museito adentro, increible! Despues de ahi fui de nuevo a la Avenida Broadway y me encontre con Agustina en el teatro y vimos Chicago. Estuvo buenisimo, musica alucinate, baile muy bueno, un poco desilusion la produccion tan chica, yo estaba esperando algo mas a lo grande y mas espectacular de Broadway.

La manana siguiente estuve con Agustina charlando un par de horas y despues fui a la ciudad. Fui a EL Soho, que copado!!!! Y tambien a la zona de Tribeca, y camine a orillas del Rio Hudson, y despues me tome un bus en la tarde hacia Boston. Pero: Nueva York, estare de vuelta!!

Tuesday 6th April. Went to the Museum of Contemporary Art, took a guided tour, really cool place. I then walked around the city a bit, and went into the Water Tower building (one of the only 2 public buildings that survived the Big Fire of 1871, after which the city was pretty much reconstructed and made anew). I then went to the Field Museum of Natural History- I was told it wasn't too good, but it was supposed to be free today, so I thought "why not?". Turned out it was not for free today, so thought "maybe not". I walked around the park a bit and then went to the Navy Pier. Cool indoor garden, shops, amusement park (the Ferris Wheel was invented here in Chicago!), and a Museum on Stained Glass and a mosaics exhibition. Then went to Sole's house (Luli's sister) and there met Sole, Luli and their mom for afternoon tea. Back to Luli's place for dinner.
Wednesday 7th. It was cold and I was feeling sick, so left the house late and went to the Chicago History Museum for a couple of hours- learned a lot! After that I met Luli at the front of her work and we went for tea and cake in a cool coffee shop nearby. Drove past Old Town, and back home for dinner.
Thursday 8th: Still feeling a bit sick, and cold day again. So again decided to spent it indoors. I went to the Art Insititute of Chicago: AWESOME! It's the second biggest museum in USA and it was amazing, I spent about 4 hours in there! After some nice pasta in a nearby coffee shop, went back to Luli's house for a bit and then met up with Sole. We got a bus together and met up with Luli after she finished her guitar lessons. We went for dinner at a very yummy Indian restaurant and met Nico there (Sole's boyfriend). Then to pick up Andy at some friends' house and stayed there for a while.
Friday 9th. Today was a very sunny and very active day. I spent all day walking outdoors, it was absolutely beautiful! I first went to Millenium Park, gorgeous!! Sculptures, art, gardens, they were even filming a movie (supposedly someone famous, I had never heard of him), an awesome bridge, and beautiful Cherry Blossom trees on the park next to it everywhere. Walked around the Loop area and Michigan Avenue with its fancy shops. Daley Civic Centre: giant Picasso sculpture at the front and the Eternal Flame. The Old Public Library (now the Cultural Centre) with its 2 beautiful domes. Harold Washington Public Library, supposedly the biggest one in the world. Buckingham Fountain, it wasn't working, but I still had fun chasing squirrels and filming them. Then got on a bus, went past the river, all along Michigan Avenue again. I went up the Hancock Building- view of the city, spectacular, and a great view from the toilet, it was full of people there taking photos, so funny! After that Luli picked me up, we went to a coffee shop, then picked up Andy and back to their place. We went out at night to Neo with some of their friends, a goths, 80's style nightclub. Heaps of fun dancing, and Luli dancing with her 7months pregnancy was a cool sight.
Saturday 10th. I spent the day with Luli walking around the city. It was again a beautiful sunny day, so we walked all along the river, past famous buildings (Wriggleys, Tribune, Trump, Sears/Willis Tower, etc). We then went and visited some of Luli's friends and met up with Andy there for a while as well. And then went out shopping with Luli, we got some maternity clothes (Luli finally accepted she needs them haha) and clothes for baby Lola. And back home for dinner, and stayed up for hours talking and looking at pictures.
Sunday 11th: We slept in, so very rushed departure to the airport, and got a plane at around midday to New York.
Bye bye Chicago, I'm gonna miss you so much Luliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

Martes 6 de Abril. Fui al Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, hice una visita guiada, muy copado el museo. Camine un poco por la ciudad y fui a la Water Tower (1 de los 2 unicos edificios publicos que sobrevivieron el Gran Fuego de 1871, despues de lo cual practicamente reconstruyeron al ciudad y la hicieron de nuevo). Despues fui al Museo Field de Historia Natural- me habian dicho que no estaba muy bueno, pero se suponia que era gratis hoy, asi que pense "por que no?". Resulto que no era gratis hoy, asi que pense "tal vez no". Camine un poco por el parque y depsues fui al Muelle Naval. Un jardin interior muy bueno, negocios, parque de diversiones (la rueda vuelta al mundo fue inventada aca en Chicago!), museo sobre vitreaux y una exhibicion de mosaicos. Despues fui a la casa de Sole (la hermana de Luli) y ahi me encontre con Sole, Luli y la mama para tomar el te. A cenar a lo de Luli.
Miercoles 7. Hacia frio y me sentia medio enferma, asi que sali de la casa tarde y fui al Museo de la Historia de Chicago por un par de horas- aprendi un monton! Despues me encontre con Luli a la salida de su trabajo y fuimos a tomar te y torta a un cafecito muy copado. Pasamos por Old Town, y volvimos a la casa para la cena.
Jueves 8: todavia un poco enferma, y dia frio de nuevo. Asi que decidi de nuevo pasar el dia puertas adentro. Fui al Inistituto de Arte de Chicago: ALUCINANTE! Es el segundo museo mas grande de USA y es increible, me pase como 4 horas ahi adentro. Despues de comer pasta en un lugar ahi cerca, volvi a la casa de Luli un rato y de ahi me encontre con Sole. Nos tomamos un colectivo juntas y nos fuimos a encontrar con Luli a la salida de su clase de guitarra. Fuimos a cenar a un restaurante indio riquisimo y nos encontramos con Nico ahi (el novio de Sole). Despues a buscar a Andy a la casa de unos amigos y nos quedamos ahi un rato.

Viernes 9 de Abril: hoy fue un dia muy soleado y muy activo. Me pase todo el dia caminando al aire libre, lindisimo! Primero fui al Parque Millenium, hermoso! Esculturas, arte, jardines, incluso estaban filmando una pelicula (supuestamente con un actor famoso, yo nunca lo habia oido nombrar), un puente genial y hermosos arboles Cherry Blossom (no se como se llaman en espaniol...) en el parque de al lado por todas partes. Camine por la zona del Loop y por la Avenida Michigan con los negocios paquetes. El Centro Civico Daley: escultura gigante de Picasso enfrente, y la Llama Eterna. La antigua Biblioteca Publica (ahora es el Centro Cultural) con sus 2 hermosas cupulas. La actual Biblioteca Publica Harold Washington, supuestamente la mas grande del mundo. La Fuente Buckingham, no estaba funcionando, pero igual me diverti persiguiendo ardillas y filmandolas. Despues me subi a un colectivo, pase el rio, y de vuelta todo a lo largo de la Avenida Michigan. Subi al edificio Hancock- vista de la ciudad espectacular, y una vista buenisima desde el banio, estaba lleno de gente en el banio sacando fotos, muy gracioso. Luli me paso a buscar por ahi, fuimos a un cafe, lo pasamos a buscar a Andy y de vuelta a la casa. A la noche fuimos a Neo con algunos amigos de los chicos, un boliche onda 80s, goticos. Muy divertido, bailando, y Luli bailando con su panza de 7 meses era una masa.

Sabado 10. Me pase el dia con Luli caminando por la ciudad. Fue de nuevo un dia re lindo y soleado, asi que caminamos todo a lo largo del rio, pasamos edificios famosos (Wriggleys, Tribune, Trump, la torre Sears/Willis, etc). Despues fuimos a visitar a algunos amigos de Luli y nos encontramos con Andy ahi. T despues fui con Luli a hacer shopping, ropa de maternidad (Luli finalmente acepto que la necesita haha) y ropa para bebe Lola. Y de vuelta a la casa a cenar, y nos quedamos horas hablando y mirando fotos.

Domingo 11: nos quedamos dormidas, asi que partida al aeropuerto a las corridas, y me tome un vuelo a Nueva York tipo al mediodia.

My flight got to Chicago at about 6pm. Luli (a friend from high school who lives here, and she's 7 months pregnant, so cute!) picked me up from the airport with her mother. It is so nice to see her again, we worked out today that we hadn't seen each other for 5 years, unbelievable! We went to Luli and Andy's (her husband) house, quick shower, and off to the house of one of their friends, for his (Ivo's) birthday party. Lots of argentineans, and argentinean food. Lots of eating. At midnight: Ivo's birthday, and Luli's 30th birthday!
3rd April: Luli's birthday. We stayed around the house, went to the supermarket, got stuff ready for her birthday party. We went for a walk up to Michigan Lake, took lots of pictures. At night Luli's friends came over for her birthday party. Again: lots of argentineans, lots of food, lots of eating.
Next day: Sunday. Easter Sunday actually. We had lunch at Luli's place with her family and some friends, and had an indoors easter eggs hunt. It was a chilled day, relaxing and eating (again).
On Monday Luli took the day off work. Luli, her sister Sole, their mother and I went out for a city tour. 3 tour guides and 1 tourist, very cool. We first headed down to the south part of town. We walked around the beautiful grounds of the University of Chicago Campus. Then we drove along the lake, and stopped for pictures, and headed all the way to the north of the city. We went to the Swedish area for lunch and looked into shops. And then to the Northwestern University campus, also beautiful and very much like in the movies, with all the frat and sorority houses and people studying on the lawns. We drove around Evanston, with HUGE houses and then went into the Bahai Temple- kinda similar to the one I saw in India, the non-denominational temple. Really amazing and impressive building. And then back to Luli's house in the evening.

Mi vuelo llego a Chicago tipo 6 de la tarde. Luli (una amiga del colegio que vive aca, y esta embarazada de 7 meses, re linda!) me fue a buscar al aeropuerto con la mama. Es tan lindo verla de nuevo, hoy nos dimos cuenta que hace 5 anios que no nos veiamos, increible!! Fuimos a la casa de Luli y Andy (el marido), ducha rapida, y a la casa de unos amigos de ellos, al cumpleanios de uno de ellos (Ivo). Muchos argentinos y comida argentina. Mucho comer. A la medicanoche: oficialmente el cumple de Ivo, y el cumple de Luli de 30!!

3 de abril: cumple de Luli. Nos quedamos en la casa durante el dia, fuimos al supermercado, preparamos las cosas para su cumpleanios. Salimos a caminar a lo largo del lago Michigan, sacamos un monton de fotos. A la noche vinieron los amigos de Luli a la casa para el festejo de su cumple. Otra vez: muchos argentinos, mucha comida argentina, mucho comer.

Al dia siguiente: Domingo. Domingo de Pascuas de hecho. Almorzamos en lo de Luli con su flia y algunos amigos, y tuvimos una busqueda de huevitos de pascua en la casa. Fue un dia tranqui, relajandonos y comiendo (de nuevo).

Luli se tomo el lunes libre del laburo. Luli, la hermana Sole, la mama, y yo fuimos de recorrido por la ciudad. 3 guias de turismo y 1 sola turista, muy bueno. Primero fuimos hacia el sur de la ciudad. Caminamos por el hermosisimo campus de la Universidad de Chicago. Despues manejamos a lo largo del lago y paramos a sacar fotos, y fuimos hasta el norte de la ciudad. Fuimos al barrio sueco a almorzar y a mirar negocios. Y despues al campus de la Universidad Northwestern, tambien hermosisimo y bien como en las peliculas, con todos los edificios donde viven los de las fraternidades y con gente sentada en el pasto estudiando. Manejamos por la zona de Evanston, con casas ENORMES y despues fuimos al Templo Bahai- parecido al que vi en India, es un templo no-denominacional. El eidificio increible, impresionante. Y despues de vuelta a la casa de Luli a la noche.

Los Angeles alone/Los Angeles sola

30th March. Hang out at the hostel after Sara left. At night went to the hostel's pub. Open mic night: people singing and a band playing.
31st March. To the Getty Centre- a huge, amazing museum, with incredible gardens. Past Bel Air- neighbourhood where famous people have their homes. I didn't know which one belongs to whom, but they were huge and expensive. Then to UCLA campus- walked around, and walked into the Film School (Jim Morrison studied there...). At night went out on a pub crawl- first time I've done one in my life. About 30-40 people from the hostel went, it was heaps of fun. Very drunk. To bed at 5am.
1st April. La Brea Tar Pits and Museum- they discovered these natural tar pits in the middle of LA where animals had fallen between 12,000 and 40,000 years ago during the Ice Age, so they have a museum with all the bones and animals they recovered, cool! Then onto Venice Beach. Walked along the beach to Santa Monica. Back to the hostel, early night.
2nd April: woke up early and got the metro all the way to the airport. Flight to Chicago, goodbye LA!

30 de Marzo. Me quede en el hostel cuando Sara se fue. A la noche al pub del hostel. Noche de microfono abierto: gente cantando y una banda tocando.
31 de Marzo: Al Getty Centre: un museo enorme y buenisimo, con jardines alucinantes. Pase por Bel Air: el barrio donde la gente famosa tiene sus casas. Yo no sabia que casa le pertenecia a quien, pero eran enormes y caras. Despues al campus de la UCLA (Universidad de California Los Angeles)- camine por el campus, y entre a la escuela de Cine (Jim Morrison estudio ahi...). A la noche fui a una seguidilla de bares, organizado por el hostel, primera vez que lo hago en mi vida. Como 30-40 personas del hostel fueron, muy divertido. Muy borracha. A la cama a las 5am.
1 de Abril. Pozos de brea y museo- descubrieron estos pozos de brea naturales en el medio de Los Angeles, donde se cayeron animales entre 12.000 y 40.000 anios atras durante la Era de Hielo, asi que tienen un museo con todos los animales y huesos que recuperaron, copado! Despues a la playa Venice. Camine por la playa hasta Santa Monica. De vuelta al hostel, a dormir temprano.
2 de Abril: me desperte temprano y me tome el subte hasta el aeropuerto. Avion a Chicago, chau Los Angeles!

Los Angeles with friends/ Los Angeles con amigas

I'm so behind with the blog it's not funny. 2 weeks. Sucks. So I'll be very brief.

28th March. Last day with Ana, in LA. We drove to the Observatory, view of the famous Hollywood sign. You can't actually get to it, disappointing, but cool view of it anyway. Originally it used to say Hollywoodland and it was set up to advertise property, and the carer used to live behind one of the L's... at least that's what I read. Then to Rodeo Drive. Lunch there. Walking into very posh shops. Then Venice Beach. Beautiful, big beach. Cold and windy. But awesome to be there- where Jim Morrison (The Doors singer) used to sleep on the rooftops of Venice Beach. Dinner at Venice, and then to the Hilton hotel. I stayed there (will explain why shortly:), and Ana left to the airport, as she's getting a flight to Baltimore, to visit her family there.
So there I am, at the Hilton Hotel. Why you ask. I have a friend called Sara, we met 2 years ago in Egypt. She lives a couple of hours south of LA and works for Hilton. So she came up to LA to spend a couple of days with me, and we got 2 nights free accommodation, yay! Sara arrived about 20minutes after Ana left. Got our room. Went out for a walk. Everything nearby was closed, got some drinks in a convenience store and back to the hotel. We stayed up talking for hours.
29th March. Plan was to go to Universal Studios with Sara. We got on the bus, got off at the Chinese Theatre (where footprints and hands of famous people are), and were on our way to the metro when we heard someone saying "tickets to Jerry Springer". We couldn't resist it. Universal Studios cancelled. We are gonna be in Jerry Springer's audience, awesome! Lunch. Walked to the studio. Two people in front of us walk in, and then they say to us: Sorry, those were the last 2 spots, it's full now. They were very apologetic, offered us to come back the next day. No, thanks, too much effort. We went in anyway to have a look at the studio, used their toilet, and got a can of coke each.
Third plan for the day: Downtown LA. Third time lucky. Chinatown: streets, parks, temple. Olvera street- mexican area, oldest house in LA, lots of stalls selling stuff from Chespirito (Chapulin Colorado, Chavo del 8- a mexican TV show I grew up with). Restaurant Philippe The Original (apparently inventors of the French Dipped Sandwich, coffee costs 75 cents). Walked around the city centre looking at buildings: theatres, tall buildings, churches, convention centres, etc. Walt Disney Concert Hall- beautiful building, beautiful gardens. Oldest park in LA. Central Market. Japanese District: dinner.
30th March. Checked out from the hotel. Went to Farmer's Market. Lunch. Chocolates. Walked around The Grove- a shopping area, old style, with a tram. Sara dropped me off back at the hostel where I stayed with Ana and she left, back home.

Estoy tan atrasada con el blog que no es gracioso. 2 semanas. Una cagada. Asi que voy a escribir corto.
28 de Marzo. Ultimo dia con Ana, en LA. Manejamos al Observatorio. Vista del famoso cartel de Hollywood. No se puede llegar hasta el cartel en si, una decepcion, pero vista buena igual del cartel. Originalmente el cartel decia Hollywoodland y lo pusieron para promocionar propiedades, y el cuidador vivia detras de una de las L's... o al menos eso lei en algun lado. Despues a Rodeo Drive. Almorzamos ahi. Entramos a negocios muy paquetes. Despues a la playa Venice. Grande y linda. Frio y viento. Pero alucinante estar ahi- donde Jim Morrison (cantante de los Doors) solia dormir en los techos de las casas de la playa Venice. Cena en Venice y despues al hotel Hilton. Yo me quede ahi (en un ratito explico por que:), y Ana se fue al aeropuerto, porque se toma un vuelo a Baltimore, va a visitar a su familia ahi.
Asi que ahi estoy, en el Hotel Hilton. Por que, te preguntaras. Tengo una amiga que se llama Sara, nos conocimos hace 2 anios en Egipto. Vive a un par de horas al sur de Los Angeles y trabaja para Hilton. Asi que se vino a LA a visitarme un par de dias, y tuvimos 2 noches de hotel gratis, yay! Sara llego como 20 minutos despues que se fue Ana. Nos dieron un cuarto. Salimos a caminar. Todo ahi cerca estaba cerrado, compramos bebidas en un kiosko y volvimos al hotel. Nos quedamos despiertas hablando por horas.
29 de Marzo. El plan era ir a Universal Studios con Sara. Nos tomamos un bondi, nos bajamos en el Teatro Chino (donde estan las manos y huellas de los famosos) y estabamos camino al subte cuando escuchamos a alguien que dice "tickets para Jerry Springer". No nos pudimos resistir. Cancelamos Universal Studios. Vamos a estar en el publico en el show de Jerry Springer, alucinante! Almuerzo. Caminamos al estudio. 2 personas adelante nuestro entran, y nos dicen a nosotras: perdon, ya esta lleno, esos eran los 2 ultimos lugares. Nos pidieron re perdon, nos ofrecieron venir al dia siguiente. No, gracias, demasiado esfuerzo. Entramos igual para mirar el estudio, usamos el banio, y nos dieron una latita de coca a cada una.
Tercer plan para el dia: el centro de LA. La tercera es la vencida. Chinatown: calles, parques, templo. Calle Olvera: area mexicana, la casa mas vieja de Los Angeles, muchos negocios vendiendo cosas de Chespirito (Chapulin Colorado, Chavo del 8). Restaurante Philippe The Original (supuestamente inventaron el French Dipped Sandwich; el cafe cuesta 75 centavos). Caminamos por el centro mirando edificios: teatros, iglesias, edificios altos, centros de convenciones, etc. El Hall de Conciertos de Walt Disney: edificio lindisimo, jardines lindisimos. El parque mas viejo de LA. El mercado central. Distrito japones: cena.
30 de Marzo. Nos fuimos del hotel. Al Mercado Farmer. Almuerzo. Chocolates. Despues caminamos por The Grove- zona de shopping, estilo antiguo, con un tranvia. Sara me llevo de vuelta al hostel donde me habia quedado con Ana y se fue, de vuelta para su casa.

Los Angeles Boulevards and the Whisky a Go Go/ Los Bulevares de Los Angeles y el Whisky a Go Go

First night in LA with Ana. We decided to go out and see town. We went out to Hollywood Boulevard first, walking along the the footpath covered with stars- it goes on for blocks and blocks, and there were so many of them which we had no idea who they were. But anyone gets a star- Donald Duck, the Rugrats, it's too much I think, but kinda cool as well. We went to Grauman's Chinese Theatre (where all the hands and feet and signatures of the famous people are on the pavement) and walked around the area a bit. After that, off to Sunset Strip- the part of Sunset Boulevard where the bars/restaurants/nightclubs are. First stop: The Whisky a Go Go. This is the place where The Doors first starting performing. I am a HUGE Doors fan. I couldn't believe I was there, in the same room where The Doors had been, touching the stage where they used to perform. It was like being in a dream, I looked around at everything and took pictures of the room I had seen so many many times in picture since I was like 13 years old. After that, I was happy and felt accomplished. We went to a bar on the Strip (no clue which one) and stayed there a few hours, and then off to bed to the hostel.

Primera noche en LA con Ana. Decidimos salir y ver la ciudad. Primero fuimos a Hollywood Boulevard, caminando por las veredas cubiertas de estrellas- son cuadras y cuadras, y habia montones de nombres que no teniamos idea quienes eran. Pero le ponen una estrella a cualquiera- el pato Donald, Aventuras en Panales, me parece que es un poco demasiado, pero esta bueno tambien. Fuimos al Teatro Chino de Grauman (donde estan las manos, pies, y firmas de los famosos en la vereda) y caminamos por ahi un poco. Despues de eso, a Sunset Strip- la parte de Sunset Boulevard donde estan los bares/restaurantes/boliches. Primera parada: el Whisky a Go Go. Este es el lugar donde los Doors empezaron a tocar en sus comienzos. Soy GRAN fanatica de los Doors. No podia creer estar ahi, en el mismo lugar donde los Doors estuvieron, tocando el escenario donde tocaban. Era como estar en un sueno, mire todo y saque fotos del lugar que yo habia visto en tantas y tantas fotos desde que tenia 13 anios. Despues de eso, estaba feliz y me sentia realizada. Fuimos a un bar del Strip (ni idea cual) y nos quedamos ahi unas horas, y despues a dormir al hostel.

Mascot/Mascota

Sorry, I forgot to write about my last mascot swap, oops!
I didn't swap mascots before leaving Bolivia (was gonna do it with Sergio, but it didn't end up happening cause we had a quick farewell), so I made the swap when I got to USA.The swap was with Ana. She gave me a little koala and I gave her the bracelet that Stefania had given me. We had the swapping ceremony at Lisa's place in Las Vegas.

Perdon, me olvide de escribir sobre mi ultimo cambio de mascota, oops!
No hice el cambio de mascota antes de irme de Bolivia (iba a hacerlo con Sergio, pero al final no lo pudimos hacer porque tuvimos una despedida rapida), asi que hice el cambio cuando llegue a USA. El intercambio fue con Ana. Ella me dio un munequito de un koala y yo le di la pulsera que me habia dado Stefania. Hicimos la ceremonia del trueque en la casa de Lisa en Las Vegas.

Driving South Day 2/ Manejando hacia el Sur Dia 2

Day 2 on our way to LA down the coast. We drove down to Santa Barbara, a very very posh area, and stayed there a few hours. We saw the palm tree-lined avenues, the rich people, but we were disappointed by the beaches- rocks and stones, shitty looking sand. The city was beautiful though, with old Spanish buildings everywhere. We took a guided tour of the Court House which was great, and then went up the tower to get a view of town. There was an anti-Obama protest going on and a wedding as well... the court House was a very popular place!
After Santa Barbara we went to Malibu: again, so disappointed by the beach!! The beaches here were bigger and the sand looked "ok", but God, it stunk! Like a fish market, yuck! Definitely not what we were expecting for the famous Southern California beaches!!
We got to Los Angeles late afternoon and went to an expensive but really cool hostel in Hollywood.

Dia 2 de nuestro viaje hacia Los Angeles por la costa. Manejamos a Santa Barbara, una zona muy muy paqueta, y nos quedamos ahi unas horas. Vimos las avenidas llenas de palmeras, la gente rica, pero nos decepcionaron las playas- rocas y piedras, arena una porqueria. Pero la ciudad era lindisima, con edificios espanioles antiguos por todos lados. Hicimos una visita guiada de la Corte que estuvo muy buena, y despues subimos a la torre para tener una vista de la ciudad. Habia una manifestacion en contra de Obama y un casamiento.... la Corte era un lugar muy popular!
Despues de Santa Barbara fuimos a Malibu: otra vez, una desilusion la playa!! Las playas aca eran mas grandes y la arena estaba "bien", pero por Dios, que baranda! Como un mercado de pescado, un asco! Definitivamente no era lo que nos esperabamos para ser las famosas playas del sur de California!
Llegamos a Los Angeles a la tarde y fuimos a un hostel caro pero muy copado en Hollywood.

Driving South Day 1/ Manejando hacia el Sur Dia 1

So off we went in our new rental car. It wasn't long before we realized the car wasn't working right. I was driving, and the steering wheel was vibrating, at times shaking vigorously. It was hilarious, it was fun for a minute to think it was like a free gym membership and we would be arriving in LA with our arms all toned, but it was really ridiculous and exhausting. So we called the rental company after about 30minutes of driving and they said we could go to the next agency and swap it there, and that they had available cars. So almost another hour's drive and we got there. A shitty faced bitch who barely looked at us said they had no cars available at all, and that we would have to wait "2, 3 or maybe 4 hours" for one to be available. We were spewing. Luckily the guy was more helpful and although he said they had no cars he said he would take ours for a drive to test it. After 5 minutes he was back, agreeing that the car was crap and suddenly he had a car available for us. So back on the road after the detour.
We drove along the beautiful highway along the coast, with views of the sea and cliffs. We stopped at a restaurant called Nepenthe (recommended by Karen) which was just gorgeous and with stunning views, a really cool place. We saw a bizarre ecosystem- together in the same place: sea elephants, seagulls, squirrels, crows, and condors (wtf?!?!) We went to Hearst Castle- an insane place. This guy decided to build a castle, just like that, cause he wanted one. So there's this huge castle on the top of a mountain, and all there is around it is nothingness: land, bush, and the coast with sea and cliffs, and small towns here and there. And it's a European style castle, really out of place for USA and even more for the setting he chose for it by the coast. Eccentric to say the least. But amazing. And it even has 4 Roman columns from IV BC as part of a temple by the pool, and 4 original egyptian statues- just wrong!
We stayed the night in a town a bit past Hearst Castle, called San Luis Obispo. BUT before we found ourselves a room, we went to another hotel, called Madonna Inn, just cause we had read it was "quirky". Quirky was to say the least, what an awesomely bizarre place! They had books with pictures of every room so we could look at them, each with a different themed decoration, some hilarious, some fun, some scary. And the bar and dining rooms were just like out of Alice in Wonderland, it was like being transported to a parallel universe being there. So we took lots of pictures, even in the men's toilet with its waterfall, and then we went to our more modest and mundane hotel for the night.

Asi que partimos en nuestro nuevo auto alquilado. No paso mucho tiempo hasta que nos dimos cuenta que el auto no funciona bien. Yo estaba manejando, y el volante me vibraba, y por momentos se movia ridiculamente para todos lados. Nos cagamos de la risa, fue muy divertido por un momento pensar que era como ser socia gratis de un gimnasio y que las 2 ibamos a llegar a Los Angeles con los brazos todos tonificados del ejercicio, pero era realmente ridiculo y agotador manejar asi. Asi que llamamos a la agencia como a la media hora de haber salido y nos dijeron que podiamos ir a la siguiente sucursal y cambiarlo ahi, que tenian autos disponibles. Asi que casi otra hora de manejo y llegamos a la siguiente sucursal. Una mina cara de culo que casi ni nos miro nos dijo que no tenian ningun auto disponible y que ibamos a tener que esperar "2, 3 o tal vez 4 horas" hasta que hubiera un auto disponible. Estabamos a las puteadas. Por suerte el tipo fue de mas ayuda y aunque tambien nos dijo que no tenian ningun auto disponible dijo que iba a llevar el nuestro a dar una vuelta para probarlo. Despues de 5 minutos estaba de vuelta, concordando con nosotras que el auto era una cagada, y de repente tenia otro auto disponible para darnos. Asi que de vuelta en la ruta despues del desvio.
Manejamos a lo margo de la ruta divina bordeando la costa, con vistas al mar y los acantilados. Paramos en un restaurante llamado Nepenthe (recomendado por Karen) que era alucinante y con vistas increibles, mucha onda tenia. Vimos un ecosistema bizarro, en un mismo lugar: morsas, gaviotas, cuervos, ardillas y condores (?!?!). Fuimos al castillo Hearst, una locura. Un tipo decidio construir un castillo, asi porque si, porque tenia ganas de tener uno. Asi que hay un castillo enorme encima de una montania, en el medio de la nada: tierra, bosque, mar y acantilados, y pueblitos de vez en cuando. Y es un castillo estilo europeo, totalmente fuera de lugar para USA y mas aun para el lugar donde esta sobre la costa. Eccentrico. Pero alucinante. Y hasta tiene 4 columnas romanas del siglo IV AC, como parte de un templo al lado de la pileta, y 4 estatuas egipcias originales- mal eso!
Pasamos la noche en un pueblo llamado San Luis Obispo, pasando un poco el castillo de Hearst. PERO antes de buscarnos un hotel fuimos a otro hotel, que se llama Madonna Inn, solo porque habiamos leido que era "raro". Raro era por decir lo minimo, que lugar magnificamente bizarro! Tenian libros con fotos de todos los cuartos asi que las miramos todas las fotos, cada cuarto con decoracion de un tema diferente, algunos graciosos, otros divertidos, otros daban miedo. Y el bar y el restaurante eran como salidos de Alicia en el Pais de las Maravillas, estar ahi era como ser transportada a un universo paralelo. Asi que sacamos muchas fotos, hasta en el banio de hombres con su catarata, y despues nos fuimos a nuestro hotel por la noche, mas modesto y mundano.

San Francisco

We got to San Francisco the next day at midday, returned our rental car and met there with Karen. Karen is an argentinean friend, we've known each other since we were about 15 years old and she's been living in USA for about 12 years. We stayed at her house during our stay in San Francisco and she was such an awesome host! She is pregnant (due any minute now!) and so was on maternity leave from work, but that didn't stop her from driving us around everywhere and walking around all day with us.
The day we arrived we went to her house in San Jose (about 40minutes drive south of San Francisco), settled in, chatted with her and her husband Leif for a while and then we went down to Capitola and Santa Cruz. We walked along the beach and the promenade and had some dinner in a mexican restaurant famous for its margaritas.
The next day we picked up a friend of Ana's (Javier, he's and argentinean guy that lives in Australia and is in San Francisco visiting his sister) and the 4 of us did our first day of San Francisco city tour. We went up to Nob Hill for city views, then to the Golden Gate park (beautiful and huge park) and lunch at a restaurant by the waterfront. After that we drove to Haight-Ashbury, the hippie area of town and walked around looking at shops. Next stop, Alamo Square, with its beautiful colourful Victorian houses on a hill "the painted ladies", and from there on to Lombard street- "the crookedest street in the world" (a zigzaging street about 100 metres long only, with 8 corners and downhill, so much fun we did it twice!). After that we went to Coit Tower for more views of the city and drove along Market street and the city centre. We then went to Mission, the latin area, and to Castro, the gay area. The 4 of us stayed the night in the city, at a friend of Karen's place, who was not there cause she is on holidays.
Next day, we went to Crissy Field, a beach with beautiful views of the Godlen Gate bridge and the city, and from there drove on the Golden Gate Bridge to the north side. Up a mountain for views, and then on to Sausalito- a cute area where rich people live by the water. We then went to Muir Woods- a national park with Redwood trees (since we couldn't see the Sequoias at Yosemite NP due to the snow, this was the second best) and did a short hike around there. We then went to Javier's sister's house for dinner, she cooked empanadas and milanesas for us (traditional argentinean food) yum! And back to Karen's place for the night.
The next day Karen, Leif, Ana and I went up to Napa Valley, famous winery region. We spent all day going to wineries, doing wine tasting, and took a guided tour in one of the wineries. We got back to San Jose at night and went out for dinner to a nearby Japanese restaurant.
Last full day, back to San Francisco for city tour part 2. We went back to Lombard street, just to take a nice picture of it from the bottom end, and then to Union Square, a square surrounded by posh stores. Then on to Chinatown for a late lunch and we walked around the area. After that Ana and I got on a trolley (travelling standing up hanging from the sides of course) and Karen followed us in the car up to Fisherman's Wharf. We walked along there, past famous pier 39 and then did the night tour of Alcatraz. It was awesome!! Really interesting and beautiful views of the city by night. Back on the mainland we tried to see the sea lions on pier 39, but it was too dark already, but we could still hear them making loud noises. We got back to Karen's place late at night.
Next day, time to go. We just got up, packed up, and Karen dropped us off at the car rental place. And that was it. Wonderful, beautiful San Francisco!

Llegamos a San Francisco al dia siguiente al mediodia, devolvimos el auto alquilado y nos encontramos ahi con Karen. Karen es una amiga argentina, nos conocemos desde que tenemos 15 anios y hace como 12 anios que ella vive en USA. Nos quedamos en su casa durante nuestra estadia en San Francisco y fue una anfitriona increible! Esta embarazada (a punto de tener en cualquier momento ya!), asi que estaba de licencia de embarazo del laburo, pero eso no le impidio llevarnos de un lado a otro en auto y caminar con nosotras todo el dia por todos lados.
El dia que llegamos fuimos a su casa en San Jose (como a 40minutos en auto al sur de San Francisco), nos acomodamos, charlamos con ella y con el marido Leif un rato y despues fuimos a Capitola y a Santa Cruz. Caminamos por la playa y por al costanera y cenamos en un restaurante mexicano famoso por sus margaritas.
Al dia siguiente pasamos a buscar a un amigo de Ana (Javier, un argentino que vive en Australia y que esta en San Francisco visitando a su hermana) y los 4 fuimos a hacer nuestro primer dia de tour por la ciudad de San Francisco. Subimos a la colina Nob a ver vistas de la ciudad, despues al parque Golden Gate (enorme y lindisimo) y almuerzo en un restaurante con vista al agua. Despues manejamos hasta Haight-Ashbury, la parte hippie de la ciudad y caminamos mirando negocios. Siguiente parada, Alamo Square, con sus hermosas y coloridas casitas victorianas en una colina, "las damas pintadas", y de ahi a la calle Lombard- "la calle mas chueca del mundo" (una calle en zigzag de como solo 100 metros de larga, con 8 esquinas y en bajada, tan divertido que lo hicimos 2 veces!). Despues de ahi fuimos a la Torre Coit para mas vistas de la ciudad y manejamos por la calle Market y por el centro de la ciudad. Despues fuimos a Mission, la zona latina, y a Castro, la zona gay. Los 4 nos quedamos a dormir en el centro, en la casa de una amiga de Karen que no estaba porque esta de vacaciones.
Al dia siguiente fuimos a Crissy Field, una playa con vista buenisima del puente Golden Gate y de la ciudad, y de ahi manejamos por el puente Golden Gate hacia el lado norte. Subimos una montania para tener vista, y despues a Sausalito- una zona divina donde la gente rica vive a orillas del agua. Despues fuimos a Muir Woods- una parque nacional con arboles Redwoods (ya que no pudimos ver las Sequoias en el Parque Nacional Yosemite por al nieve, esto fue la segunda mejor opcion), e hicimos una caminata cortita por ahi. Despues fuimos a cenar a la casa de la hermana de Javier, nos cocino empanadas y milanesas, riquisimo! Y volvimos a dormir a lo de Karen.
Al dia siguiente Karen, Leif, Ana y yo fuimos al Valle de Napa, zona famosa de vinedos. Pasamos todo el dia yendo a bodegas, probando vinos, e hicimos un tour de una de las bodegas. Volvimos a San Jose ya de noche, y fuimos a cenar a un restaurante japones ahi cerca.
Ultimo dia completo, volvimos a San Francisco para el tour de la ciudad 2. Volvimos a la calle Lombard, solo para sacarle una foto desde abajo, y despues a Union Square, una plaza rodeada de negocios caros. Despues a Chinatown para un almuerzo tardio y caminamos por la zona. Despues de eso Ana y yo nos subimos a un tranvia (viajamos paradas agarradas de los costados por supuesto) y Karen nos siguio en el auto hasta Fisherman's Wharf (la zona del puerto). Caminamos por ahi, pasamos el famoso muelle 39 e hicimos un tour nocturno a Alcatraz. Estuvo excellente! Re interesante, y vistas lindisimas de la ciudad de noche. De vuelta en tierra firme tratamos de ver los lobos marinos en el muelle 39, pero estaba demasiado oscuro, pero los escuchamos haciendo ruidos fuertes. Llegamos de vuelta a lo de Karen tarde a la noche.
Al dia siguiente, hora de irnos. Nos levantamos, nos alistamos, y Karen nos llevo al lugar de alquiler del auto. Y eso fue. Increible, hermoso San Francisco!

National Parks/ Parques Nacionales

So, time to say goodbye to Las Vegas and to Lisa. We rented a car the next day, last minute of course, and at about 1pm we set off. We went to the Death Valley National Park, we got there in the afternoon and after chatting to a few people who were staying on the campgrounds we came to the conclusion that sleeping in the car instead of paying for the night (even though we didn't even have a tent) was very wise and not frowned upon by our fellow campers who did pay. But first, we did drive around a bit and watched sunset, and then went to the hotel next door for a free shower (as advised by the fellow campers) and dinner (we did pay for dinner). The night in the car was good, it wasn't cold at all so it was fine. Our only problem was that our rental car (a PT Cruiser, AKA Kit) had a life of his own, and liked to beep, leave lights on, do all sorts of attention seeking stuff which wasn't very discrete; very inconvenient when we were trying to get in unnoticed.
The next day we woke up at sunrise and quickly drove off. We first went to the salt plains- beautiful and neverending. We then drove to some colourful mountains (Artist's palette) and to the Golden Canyon (the walk to the cathedral was not worth it...). We kept looking at stuff on our way out, we were driving towards Yosemite National Park, but due to the time of the year most of the passes were closed, so we had to drive up north a lot to get to a pass that was open. We stayed the night in a small town on the way... can't even recall the name now.
The next day we decided to head up north a bit more and see Lake Tahoe, since we were already so close to it. Lake Tahoe was absolutely beautiful- what a perfect setting for a ski field, with the mountains surrounding the lake, awesome views. We walked around a bit, and went to the Marina area, with expensive looking houses and the Marina water all frozen. We stayed a few hours there and then drove on to Yosemite National Park. The prices for accommodation in the NP were ridiculously expensive (they wanted $95 for an unheated tent!! Plus tax of course), so we drove to El Portal, a town just outside the NP and stayed there for almost the same price (and at a huge hotel room which was big enough to make 3 normal sized rooms in there).
The next day we explored Yosemite. It's huge, lots of stuff to do, but because of the time of the year some parts were closed off due to the snow. We saw the famous waterfall (repeatedly, from every possible angle), some other waterfalls, the Captain (a rock), the half dome (another rock), did some short hikes, went to the museum, the cemetery, the amphiteatre. We left in the afternoon and drove about 1 or 2 hours only, to stay the night in a very "happening" town we had seen on the drive on the way there. We stayed in this cute little hotel, with every room decorated to the detail, EVERYTHING was matching in the room, it was so funny!! It had an old style phone, a jacuzzi, and lots of red things (the phone, the coffee maker, the hair dryer, towels, sheets, curtains, soap, shampoo, deodorizer, EVERYTHING!). We had some dinner in a nice restaurant and then went for a night out to the "oldest continuously running saloon in California"... yes, what a claim to fame! We had a fun night chatting and dancing with the locals and we met a nice Canadian girl as well.

LLego la hora de despedirnos de Lisa y de Las Vegas. Alquilamos un auto al dia siguiente, a ultimo minuto obviamente, y nos fuimos tipo 1pm. Fuimos al Parque Nacional Death Valley (Valle de la Muerte), llegamos a la tarde y despues de hablar con alguna gente que se estaba quedando en el camping llegamos a la conclusion de que dormir en el auto en vez de pagar por acampar (aunque no teniamos ni carpa en verdad) era una decision inteligente y aceptada por la gente que acampaba y si pagaba por la noche. Pero antes, dimos algunas vueltas con el auto y miramos el atardecer, y despues fuimos al hotel de al lado para una ducha gratis (consejo de los acampantes) y a cenar (pagamos por la cena al menos). La noche durmiendo en el auto estuvo bien, no hacia frio asi que dormimos bien. Nuestro unico problema era que nuestro auto alquilado (un PT Cruiser, al que bautizamos Kit, por el auto fantastico) tenia vida propia, y le gustaba hacer ruidos, alarmas, prender luces, y hacer todo tipo de cosas para llamar la atencion y no era muy discreto, un gran inconveniente ya que intentabamos pasar desapercibidas.

Al otro dia nos despertamos al amanecer y rapidamente nos fuimos. Primero fuimos a las planicies de sal- hermosas e interminables. Despues manejamos a unas montanias coloridas (la paleta del artista) y al Canion Dorado (la caminata a La Catedral no valio la pena...). Seguimos mirando cosas en el camino saliendo, manejando hacia el Parque Nacional Yosemite, pero por al epoca del anio la mayoria de los pasos para llegar estaban cerrados, asi que tuvimos que desviarnos bastante hacia el norte para poder cruzar. Pasamos la noche en un pueblito en el camino... ni me acuerdo el nombre.

Al dia siguiente decidimos seguir aun mas hacia el norte para ir al Lago Tahoe, ya que estabamos cerca. Tahoe totalmente divino- un lugar perfecto para hacer ski, con montanias rodeando el lago, una vista espectacular! Caminamos dando vueltas y fuimos al area de la marina, con casas caras y el agua de la marina toda congelada. Nos quedamos unas horas ahi y depsues manejamos hasta el Parque Nacional Yosemite. Los precios para dormir en el parque nacional eran ridiculamente caros (querian $95 por una carpa sin calefaccion, mas impuestos obviamente!), asi que manejamos hasta El Portal, un pueblo justo afuera del parque nacional y nos quedamos ahi por casi el mismo precio (en un cuarto de hotel enorme, lo suficientemente grande como para hacer 3 cuartos de hotel en ese mismo espacio).

Al dia siguiente fuimos a recorrer Yosemite. Es enorme, hay muchisimo que hacer, pero por la epoca del anio habia varias partes cerradas por la nieve. Vimos la famosa catarata ( repetidas veces, desde todos loa angulos posibles), otras cataratas mas, El Capitan (una roca), la Media Doma (otra roca), hicimos unas caminatas cortas, fuimos al museo, el cementerio, el amfiteatro. Nos fuimos a la tarde y manejamos solo 1 o 2 horas para quedarnos en un pueblo "con vida" que habiamos pasado en el camino de ida. Nos quedamos en un hotel chiquito divino, con cada habitacion decorada minuciosamente, TODO hacia juego en el cuarto, muy gracioso! Tenia un telefono antiguo, un jacuzzi, y un monton de cosas rojas (telefono, cafetera, secador de pelo, toallas, sabanas, cortinas, jabon, shampoo, desodorizador de ambientes, TODO). Cenamos en un lindo restaurant y despues salimos al "bar continuamente funcionando mas viejo de California"... si, si, que importante! La pasamos muy bien, charlando y bailando con los locales, y tambien conocimos a una mina de Canada divina.
